| Noller/Sylla - West Africa meets NYC NOLLER/SYLLA is a New York City based band that brings together traditional West African rhythms and contemporary jazz to create an exciting and accessible mix of pulsing grooves and soaring melodies. Co-led by American jazz drummer Jeremy Noller and Guinean percussionist Mangue Sylla, the group performs high energy arrangements of traditional African songs as well as original compositions inspired by West Africa's vast musical heritage. ABOUT JEREMY NOLLER: With a body of work that spans across many genres, jazz drummer and percussionist Jeremy Noller has proven himself a uniquely adaptable and versatile musician. Since his arrival in New York City in 2003, Jeremy has performed and recorded with a wide array of jazz and world music groups. His musical depth is matched by his mastery of an array of percussion instruments, and his compositions reflect the diversity of his experience. Released in 2010, Jeremy's debut album Music Notes flows seamlessly through musical landscapes, charting a distinctly accessible intersection between contemporary jazz and traditional West African rhythms. This too is the inspiration for his latest project, NOLLER/SYLLA, a collaboration with Guinean percussionist Mangue Sylla. Originally from Libertyville IL, Jeremy began studying percussion at the age of nine. A standout musician in high school, he won a music scholarship to the University of Illinois, where he studied classical percussion with William Moersch. He went on to the University of North Florida, where he explored his deepening love for jazz with pianist Kevin Bales and legendary saxophonist/educator Bunky Green. While at UNF, Jeremy won numerous scholarships and awards including a Downbeat Student Music Award for Outstanding Instrumental Group in 2002. After graduating with honors in 2003, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of Music. There he completed a master's degree in jazz studies under the tutelage of world-renown drummer John Riley. In 2011, Jeremy was accepted on a full scholarship into The Juilliard School's highly selective Jazz Artist Diploma program where he continued his studies with Billy Drummond and the program's artistic director Carl Allen. While at Juilliard, Jeremy was co-winner of the arranging award at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam's Keep An Eye International Jazz Competition, as well as the recipient of Juilliard's Knowles Prize for Jazz upon his graduation in 2013. In touring throughout the U.S., Europe, Central America, and South America, Jeremy has performed with a diverse assemblage of notable musicians. He has appeared alongside luminaries such as Eddie Henderson, Dick Oatts, and Bunky Green, and has performed at major music festivals such as the Blue Note Jazz Festival, the Guatemala International Jazz Festival, the Barcelona International Jazz Festival, and Lollapalooza. In NYC, Jeremy has performed at top venues including: Jazz at Lincoln Center, Highline Ballroom, The Jazz Gallery, 55 Bar, Cornelia Street Café, Symphony Space, and Joe's Pub. An experienced music educator, Jeremy Noller has been actively teaching for over 15 years. He is currently on faculty at the Bloomingdale School of Music in Manhattan, an adjunct instructor at Fordham University, and presents workshops at schools and universities around the world. Jeremy has co-led workshops on behalf of The Juilliard School for participants of all ages throughout the US, Central America, and South America. He performs in educational outreach programs in New York City with both the Drum Café and the Ethos Percussion Group, and has taught as a resident artist for Midori & Friends and Young Audiences New York.
