| Start 2019 with Jazz Masters: Toshiko Akiyoshi & Lew Tabackin and Maucha Adnet @ Jazz Forum This Weekend NEA Jazz Master Toshiko Akiyoshi & Lew Tabackin Quartet Toshiko Akiyoshi and reed virtuoso Lew Tabackin have been leading and performing in top jazz groups since the 1960's. There are not enough superlatives to describe Toshiko Akiyoshi, a Japanese jazz pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader. She's received fourteen Grammy Awards and has been awarded a lifetime honor as an NEA Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. Performing for over six decades, Akiyoshi is known for her challenging and full-textured arrangements that sometimes evoke her homeland. Since her beginnings on the piano at age six, Akiyoshi has become the leader of her world-renowned big band often featuring Lew Tabackin, Lew Tabackin is a tenor saxophonist and flutist with astonishing vision. His electrifying flute playing is virtuosic, primordial, cross-cultural, and passionate. His distinctive tenor sax style includes the use of wide intervals, abrupt changes of mood and tempo, and purposeful fervor, all in the service of showing the full range of possibilities of his instrument - melodically, rhythmically, and dynamically. Akiyoshi was the first woman to win Best Arranger and Composer awards in Down Beat magazine's annual Readers' Poll. Tabackin has been voted first place in Swing Journal Readers' Poll four years in a row for his flute playing brilliance.
