| Get to Know: Greg Yasinitsky - Yazz Band - Award Winning Saxophonist Greg Yasinitsky is an internationally recognized composer and saxophonist. He is the recipient of the American Prize for his Jazz Concerto for Piano and Orchestra and is a recipient of grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Commission Project of New York, Meet the Composer West, ASCAP, Artist Trust, Washington State Music Teachers Association (WSMTA) and the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA). Additionally, Yasinitsky has been involved in education for over forty years. He is a Regents Professor in the School of Music at Washington State University where he teaches composition, jazz studies and saxophone. He is a Board Member of the Jazz Education Network, is a member of the Washington Music Educators Hall of Fame, and is a recipient of the WSU Eminent Faculty Award, the top honor for faculty at WSU, and the Distinguished Faculty Award, the top honor in the College of Arts and Sciences. Also, he is the author of the book Improvisation 101: Major, Minor and Blues, published by Advance Music. Yasinitsky can be heard with Tom Harrell, Art Lande and others on recordings released by the Musical Heritage Society, Soul Note, Palo Alto and Revelation Records. His playing and compositions can be heard on over fifty compact discs including recordings released by Vienna Modern Masters, Arizona University Recordings, Open Loop Records, Washington State University Recordings and his own label, YAZZ Recordings. Yasinitsky is also in demand as a conductor and clinician, and has presented concerts and workshops throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. Additionally, Yasinitsky has been the subject of articles and reviews in Down Beat, JazzIz, Jazz Player, Saxophone Journal, The Instrumentalist, Jazz Educators Journal and Yamaha's New Ways magazines and has contributed articles to numerous scholarly journals. Yasinitsky is a Yamaha performing artist and JodyJazz artist. YAZZ Band features the exciting, original, contemporary big band compositions of bandleader and saxophonist Greg Yasinitsky, performed by fantastic musicians based mainly in the Pacific Northwest. The program includes everything from modal jazz to bop to ballads, hard swinging to even-eighth notes, and reimaginings of the blues. A number of these compositions were commissions including music written especially for the 30th anniversary of the British Columbia Interior Jazz Festival, the 25th anniversary of the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts, the Louisiana State University Jazz Band, University of Arkansas Jazz Band and College of San Mateo Jazz Band. This program was recorded in the Washington State University Recording Studio during three days in June of 2017 with an additional session to record Partial Eclipse in December of 2017.
