DAVID LOPATO NEW QUINTET at KITANO, WED., MAY 30!

After last year's release of the large ensemble recording "Gendhing for a Spirit Rising" which Downbeat Magazine aptly described as "unlike anything you are likely to hear this year (or any year)", award-winning pianist-composer David Lopato turns to a format he has not visited in 25 years: two-horn quintet. Lopato debuts this group on May 30 at Kitano, performing for the first time with two brilliant musicians: composer-trombonist Ed Neumeister and drummer Rudy Royston, in addition to longtime associates Lucas Pino and Ratzo Harris. "The addition of a second horn, particularly trombone, which I've always loved, is proving to be greater than the sum of the parts. I'm excited about the possibilities, especially given how incredible my bandmates all are."
The program will consist entirely of original compositions spanning the gamut of traditional and modern jazz.

"an inventive and resourceful pianist...his compositions never faltering for a second"
