| Park Avenue Armory Debut on 11/21 & Kenya Tour! Dear Music Lovers: This month is a special one for me. On Tuesday, November 21, I will premiere my first large-scale composition at the Park Avenue Armory. "Folk Songs of Naboréa: a songcycle for 7 voices" imagines the folk music of a futuristic, post-nuclear society. It features 7 vocalists (Eleni Arapoglou, Tomas Cruz, Christie Dashiell, Michael Mayo, Sofia Ribeiro, Vuyo Sotashe, and I), plus special guest Yacouba Sissoko on kora. Interdisciplinary artist Nguyen Smith is also collaborating on a piece for the occasion. This concert is part of the Armory's Artist Studio series, curated by Jason Moran, and will be a double bill with the inimitable Ran Blake and Dominique Eade. It is a huge honor for me to present my work in this historic space, alongside such esteemed artists, and I am very grateful to Jason for the opportunity and challenge to push myself into new territory. Tickets available here. I will also play at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Friday, November 10th with my quintet featuring Juancho Hererra (guitar), Leo Genovese (piano), Bam Bam Rodríguez (bass), and Yayo Serka (drums). This event is FREE!!! and takes place in the main hall, at the foot of the famed staircase. Sets at 5:45 and 7:15pm. Last but not least, I so happy to be back in East Africa to sing as a special guest with the amazing Senegalese bassist/singer Alune Wade this Saturday, November 4 at the Safaricom Jazz Lounge in Nairobi, Kenya. It's been quite a whirlwind since we arrived; check in with me on social media for regular updates/photos/videos of this incredible experience! Asante sana for your support, and I can't wait to share some new music with you soon. Kavita write your comments about the article :: © 2017 Jazz News :: home page |
