| Lucas Pinot + No Net Nonet Album Release The Answer is No, due out September 29th on Outside in Music, is tenor saxophonist Lucas Pino's second outing with his large ensemble the "No Net Nonet" whose 2015 debut on Origin Records was met with critical acclaim from press and fans alike. This collection of seven original compositions explores a time in our world that is more connected than ever before, but at the same time more isolated than ever. These pieces take the listener on a journey of love, loss, loneliness, empathy, and serenity. The No Net Nonet's ability to execute Pino's sophisticated compositions comes at little surprise based on the rising star studded cast he assembled for this latest release. The front line features the likes of alto saxophonist Alex LoRe, trumpeter Mat Jodrell, trombonist Nick Finzer, and baritone saxophonist Andrew Gutauskas. With a powerful and swinging rhythm section held down by guitarist Rafal Sarnecki, pianist Glenn Zaleski, bassist Desmond White, and drummer Jimmy Macbride. In a time where small ensembles rule the landscape, it is Pino's persistence and vision that enables this group to flourish, including a four-year monthly residency at Smalls Jazz Club. The dynamic blend of personalities allows the ensemble to cover a wide swath of colors as well as feature the virtuosity of the group's soloists. Pick 'Em Up. Turn the Lights Out and Take a Walk in the Sky "… are about the feeling of freedom… the feeling of living a life with liberty." These two pieces are a meditation on the transcendence of our mortality. Pino invites you to ponder the limitations of a fear-based mindset. Capturing a longing for the future, The World Ahead, paints the picture of a distant city glowing bright but shrouded in a mist. We don't know what lies ahead when we finally reach it, whether it be utopian or dystopian. We can't see our future but it is coming. "Sea Level is a beautiful and solemn reflection of mourning after the passing of our dear friend, Peter Spear. One of my most distinct memories of Peter was when we were running through a park during a few free moments on a tour and he (originally from Boulder, Colorado) yelled out to us - I feel like I can do anything at sea level! " While Pino is reflecting on the past, and pondering the future, he has also included a number of compositions that deal with the here and now of life in 2017. Sidestep was written about getting out of your own way to side step yourself into another reality. It is an ode to breaking patterns and putting yourself in a new state. Mass-produced Person on the other hand deals with the inherent problems with our current dogma. "More and more we consume mass-produced products ranging from our educational systems, to the clothes we wear, to the food we eat. I believe innovation is borne out of recognizing the failures of unquestioned methodology – a result of the we have always done it this way mentality." The closing of this album is a love letter to Pino's wife, Roxy Coss. I Can't Remember (When I Didn't Love You) is a celebration of their life together. The ups and downs, the bending but not breaking, and the building of a life together. Not to mention, a sly reference to the occasional slip up of the memory!
