A special commemorative book will also be published in the Fall detailing the history of the COLA Individual Artist Fellowships Program with samples of some of the artists' work and critical essays about the initiative's elements and associated programming. Featured artists include: Michael Brewster, Wanda Coleman, James Doolin, Ron George, Tony Gleaton, Arthur Jarvinen, Larry Karush, Willie Robert Middlebrook, Jr., Rachel Rosenthal, Michael White and Norman Yonemoto ▽ Leisei Chen was born and raised in Kobe, Japan of Chinese heritage surrounded by a multi-cultural environment. A child prodigy at age 4 of the electric organ and piano, her vast musical knowledge & training includes classical western, Chinese, and modern music. Leisei's professional career begun at age of 10, as an organist/pianist for weddings and events. At age 14, she became deeply involved in Jazz, Latin and Brazilian Music and eventually attended the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. In her search of Spirituality in JAZZ, she was mentored & performed with JAZZ luminaries such as Evelyn Blakey (Art Blakey's Daughter), Buddy Catlett (Louis Armstrong), Billy Wallace (Max Roach) and others. Leisei is a Qigong/Taiji artist and founder of "Qi Arts." She choreographed and performed for the Pat Graney Dance Company "The Movement Meditation Project" with 150 women martial artists. Serendipitously, Leisei reunited with a groundbreaking legendary Jazz violinist & composer Michael White. Soon they became life and music partners & formed "Michael White Quintet". Leisei & Michael recorded & designed an award winning album "Voices", with Timothy Young, Cecil McBee and Kenneth Nash as well as producing "tour the ARTS.MWQ", collaborating with a world-class duo of musicians & featured artists in live performances & solo exhibitions, based on a theme "People Of All Colors And Arts Coming Together For Humanity". She co-created, co-composed and arranged, Michael's new work "Orbit" for the 2013 COLA Individual Artist Fellowship. Leisei is a strategic board member of the Museum Of Jazz And Art in Oakland, California. She is currently creating a multi-cultural integrated arts project "Tribute For Michael White Spiritual Jazz Violinist." ✴︎ Emile Porée is a Jazz musician, and vocalist who enjoys performing to a broad music loving audience. Either Solo, or with his Trio he likes and fuses many musical genres. To this end, Emile Porée considers himself a musical activist. Today, Emile Porée is recording his own music and performing on the music scene locally, with bands and various artists. It's no wonder that bands and producers are big supporters and advocate of Emile Porée.
