MPS Records: New digital releases (April 21st, 2017)

The next digital re-issues are two albums from the 70's. First a beautifully recorded and played album by Fatty George with a vibrant authenticity. The music digs deep into the Chicago jazz tradition. And second a classic MPS album by Joe Haider and Slide Hampton live recorded at Munich Domicile jazz club.

Fatty George And His Chicago Jazz Band - Fatty '78 //1978

Viennese clarinetist/alto saxophonist Franz Georg 'Fatty George' Pressler ranks as one of the major figures in Europe's traditional jazz renaissance. Influenced by Benny Goodman's swing style and Lee Konitz' modernism, George brought a touch of the contemporary into his brand of classic Chicago jazz. The sextet on this 1978 release includes one of Europe's most respected traditional jazz players, George's longtime friend and musical companion, Austrian trumpeter/guitarist Oscar Klein, while Swiss drumming phenom Charly Antolini fires up the rhythm section.

Line-Up: Hans Lengenfeld (Bass), Fatty George (Clarinet), Charly Antolini (Drums), Hans Van Der Sys (Piano), Roy Crimmins (Trombone, Vocals), Oscar Klein (Trumpet, Guitar)

Slide Hampton - Joe Haider Orchestra - Give Me A Double //1975

This 1974 two-album big band set counts as one of several classic MPS albums recorded live at Munich's renowned Domicile jazz club. A master composer/arranger, American Slide Hampton stands alongside trombonists JJ Johnson and Albert Mangelsdorff as one of the greats on that instrument. German pianist Joe Haider was a mainstay on the German jazz scene at that time, and as member of the Domicile's house band, played with most of the major international jazz players of the period. The band is comprised of a potent mix of American expatriates and Europeans, all major figures in the music. Eight of the ten pieces are penned by either Hampton or Haider, music written within the contemporary big band jazz tradition and molded by two strong creative personalities.

Line-Up: Ferdinand Povel (Alto Saxophone, Flute), Isla Eckinger (Bass), Billy Brooks (Drums), Joe Haider (Piano), Dexter Gordon (Tenor Saxophone), Andy Scherrer (Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone), Bob Burgess, Slide Hampton (Trombone), Ack Van Rooyen, Benny Bailey, Idrees Sulieman (Trumpet, Flugelhorn), Eric Van Lier (Tuba, Bass Trombone)
