| Manhattan School of Music Free Performances - Jan/Feb 2017 Manhattan School of Music, one of the world's leading music conservatories, offers hundreds of free concerts open to the public in New York City throughout the academic year. This January and February 2017, performance highlights include: The Robert Mann String Quartet Institute JAN 4-8 The 2016 Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival Britten's War Requiem at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, West Side Story 60th Anniversary Tribute by MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra Details about JAN-FEB 2017 concert highlights below for our full schedule of concerts and master classes please visit: www.msmnyc.edu JANUARY The Robert Mann String Quartet Institute: January 48 Master Classes on January 4th (11 AM) & January 57 (2 PM) in Miller Recital Hall Screening of Speak the Music: Robert Mann and the Mysteries of Chamber Music by Academy Award-winning director Allan Miller on January 6, 7 pm (Miller Recital Hall) Final Concert on January 8, 2:30 pm (Greenfield Hall free of charge, no tickets required) Manhattan School of Music (MSM) hosts the sixth annual Robert Mann String Quartet Institute, featuring five of North America's most promising young string quartets personally chosen by Mr. Man. The quartets take part in several master classes taught by Mr. Mann (open to the public) and receive intensive coaching from faculty that includes MSM Dean of Instrumental Performance David Geber, Chair of the MSM String Department Nicholas Mann, members of the American String Quartet (MSM Quartet in Residence), and the Tokyo String Quartet's Kazuhide Isomura. The public concert on January 8 in MSM's Greenfield Hall features all of the participating quartets and showcases the week's accomplishments. American String Quartet: January 20 Peter Winograd and Laurie Carney, violin; Daniel Avshalomov, viola; Wolfram Koessel, cello. Guest artists: Nicolas Mann, violin and Alan Stepansky, cello. FEBRUARY MSM Philharmonia: February 1 Perry So conducts ADAMS Lollapalooza; BRAHMS Symphony NO. 1 in C Minor, Op. 68; and BEEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58 with the Zaslavsky-Koch Competition Winner. (7:30 PM, Neidorff-Karpati Hall, free) MSM Jazz Arts Vocal Big Band: February 2 Jeremy Manasia directs the MSM Jazz Arts Vocal Big Band (7:30 PM, Ades Performance Space, free) Jane Glover Voice Master Class: February 16 Join us in a free master class with Jane Glover where she coaches talented MSM Vocal students. (4 PM, Greenfield Hall, free) 2017 Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival, February 1720 High school students from across the U.S. take part in masterclasses, workshops, and jam sessions, followed by a day-long competition at MSM, and a final concert at the Jazz Standard with the Mingus Big Band. (Times and locations TBA) Thus annual event celebrates the music and legacy of Charles Mingus is celebrated February 1720, when the MSM Jazz Arts Program collaborates with Let My Children Hear Music/The Charles Mingus Institute for the Seventh Annual Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival, produced by Sue Mingus and MSM. Windscape: February 20 Tara Helen O'Connor, flute; Randall Ellis, oboe; Alan R. Kay, clarinet; Frank Morelli, bassoon; David Jolley, horn. (Greenfield Hall, 7:30 pm, free) Join respected MSM Woodwind Quintet in Residence Windscape for a performance of Memories and Milesposts. RAVEL Prιlude and Fugue from Le Tombeau de Couperin; MAMLOK Allegro molto from Wind Quintet; STUCKY Serenade for Wind Quintet; RAVEL Forlane and Rigaudon from Le Tombeau de Couperin; ARGENTO (arr. Kay) Songs; and RAVEL Menuet and Toccata from Le Tombeau de Couperin. MSM Chamber Choir and Orchestra with the Cathedral Choral: February 21 Kent Tritle conducts the DURUFLE Requiem at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine with the MSM Chamber Choir and Orchestra and Cathedral Choral. Soloists include Kristen Sollek, mezzo-soprano, Arthur Fiacco, cello, and Raymond Nagem, organ. (7:30 PM, Cathedral of St. John the Divine, tickets required) MSM Chamber Sinfonia with Conductor, Jane Glover: February 22 Conducting great, Jane Glover, leads the MSM Chamber Sinfonia in C. P. E. BACH Symphony No. 2 in E-flat Major, (Wq. 183/2), SCHUBERT Symphony No. 9 in C Major, D. 944 ("Great"), and MOZART Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622 with clarinet soloist, Chung Yoo. (7:30 PM, Neidorff-Karpati Hall, free) MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz OrchestraWEST SIDE STORY REVISITED: February 24 A 60th Anniversary Tribute West Side Story had its premiere on Broadway in 1957, redefining American musical theatre and searing into the popular imagination. The MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra will present new Latin-jazz arrangements of Leonard Bernstein's timeless score. The School is dedicated to the personal, artistic, and intellectual development of aspiring musicians, from its Precollege students through those pursuing postgraduate studies.
