MPS - Last digital release bunch in 2016

This is the last digital release bunch in 2016. The re-issue program will be continued next year. We wish you great holidays and a successful start to 2017.

The Newport All Stars - Tribute to Duke
Best known as the world's "most famous jazz impresario", George Wein founded the iconic Newport Jazz Festival in 1954. An avid jazz pianist, Wein fronted a series of groups under the title The Newport All Stars. The bands were composed of major players ranging from Dixieland to Swing on into mainstream. This 1969 group included trumpeter Ruby Braff; defined as an "Ivy League Armstrong" by Jack Teagarden, Braff was a young player who opted for Dixieland. Barney Kessel and Kenny Burrell were two of the top mainstream guitarists of the era, while Joe Venuti was a violin maestro, and a jazz pioneer on the instrument. Red Norvo brought the vibraphone into the jazz mainstream. His playing crossed over genres, as his work with Goodman, Parker, and Mingus attests. A rock-solid rhythm section anchors the group.

Pork Pie - Transitory
One of Europe's most dynamic players, Dutch Keyboardist Jasper Van't Hof made his name playing with the likes of Jean Luc Ponty, George Gruntz, and Archie Shepp. Formed in 1974, the band boasts a lineup of jazz giants playing cutting-edge fusion; Van't Hof's Pork Pie was "…as exploratory, electrifying, and exciting as anything going on in North America and Transitory proves it" (John Kelman, allaboutjazz). Van't Hof's intense brand of fusion reigns on Epoch, with reed maestro Charlie Mariano on alto sax and Jasper on electric piano as the story tellers.

Pork Pie - The Door Is Open
This 1975 album continues Pork Pie's cutting-edge exploration on the outer boundaries of fusion, jazz, and ethno. Keyboardist Van't Hof, saxophonist Charlie Mariano, and guitarist Philip Catherine are joined by renowned Danish musician Bo Stief on electric bass and English drummer John Marshall of Soft Machine fame. Catherine's Devil Toes heats up in a tempestuous modal flare, with Mariano's soprano supplying the fire. Mariano pursues the haunting melody on his Zana, followed by Catherine's majestic solo over Van't Hof's flowing chordal backdrop. Written by one of the greatest South Indian classical music composers, Tyagaraga (1767-1847), Mariano's arrangement of Telisi Rama illustrates the music's influence on such jazz greats as John Coltrane, and Van't Hof's stellar piano solo intimates his debt to McCoy Tyner.
