| MPS Pt.1. - Two month of big bands and large ensembles The last two month of the year 2016 will be full of records by big bands and large ensembles. Multiple styles will be represented: From Dixieland and New Orleans sounds to gospel and tango. Check out the first bunch of re-issues: The Saints & Sinners - Sugar The Saints & Sinners was one of the most highly regarded American Dixieland jazz ensembles of the 1960s. The band includes several swing giants, including trombonist Vic Dickenson, who worked with such greats as Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins, and Billie Holiday and pianist Red Richards whose playing credentials include Sidney Bechet and Frank Sinatra; then there's reedman Rudy Powell who played with the likes of Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, and Ray Charles. The band includes another Waller alumni, Trumpeter Herman Autrey. The Original Tuxedo 'Jass' Band This legendary ensemble was born in 1910 when 'Papa' Oscar Celestin took over the band at the Tuxedo Dance Hall in Storyville, New Orleans' notorious Red Light district. After Celestin's death in 1954, banjo/guitarist Albert French took over. (Albert's grandson, drummer Gerald French runs the current addition of the world's longest continually functioning jazz band.) The music is classic New Orleans jazz, carrying on a tradition that went back over a half century at the time of this 1964 recording. The Keynotes - Get On That Gospel Train This album is quite a surprise! The 25-strong mixed Afro-American gospel group from the San Francisco Bay area expands the traditional black gospel/spiritual lexicon with rich modern harmonies and sophisticated counterpoint. Every piece presents a unique, modern, multi-dimensional interpretation of the original gospel. For the most part the choir sings a cappella, but on four pieces a quartet of crack West Coast jazz musicians in varying groupings accompany The Keynotes. They include pianist George Cables, famous for his work with Frank Zappa as well as a myriad of successful fusion albums, and saxophonist/flutist Hadley Caliman, known for his work with Freddie Hubbard and Gerald Wilson, among others.
