| World Premiere Of Franzetti's In The Key Of Jazz: Suite For Classical Guitar And Jazz Orchestra On October 21, the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Orchestra will perform the world premiere of Carlos Franzetti's In the Key of Jazz: Suite for Classical Guitar and Jazz Orchestra, featuring Grammy nominee Sergio Puccini on guitar, under the direction of MSM's Justin DiCioccio. Franzetti, a prolific award-winning composer, draws on diverse inspirations and various styles for this large-scale jazz composition, commissioned for guest soloist Puccini with the support of the City of Buenos Aires and the Secretaria de Cultura de la Municipalidad de Rosario. The first of Franzetti's "In the Key of" works was for tango, composed in 2014. The resulting CD, In the Key of Tango, was a critical success and received a Latin Grammy Nomination for Best Tango Album. "In the Key of Jazz is a fresh new work for jazz orchestra, " says DiCioccio, Associate Dean and Chair of MSM's Jazz Arts program. "We are proud to be giving this piece its world premiere." The MSM Jazz Orchestra's one-night-only performance will take place on Friday, October 21 (7:30 pm) and is free and open to the public. In addition to Franzetti's composition, the concert will include two works for solo guitar: Prelude no. 3, in jazz style by Santiago Grande Castelli and Hola Sebastián by Argentine guitarist/composer Cacho Tirao. This will be one of the first major concerts in Manhattan School of Music's newly renamed Neidorff-Karpati Hall (formerly John C. Borden Auditorium). Puccini and Franzetti – both Argentine – have premiered and recorded works together in the past. In 1998, Puccini recorded Franzetti's compositions for the album San Francisco Camerata Americana for Klavier Records. "Ever since I began playing jazz electric guitar as a young person, " says Puccini, "I have always dreamed of performing a composition like this. When I spoke to Carlos about this idea, he was immediately captivated." In the Key of Jazz is a unique work, adding to the few compositions featuring the sound of the Spanish classical guitar with a jazz orchestra. It also "explores the musical possibilities of mixing several Latin American rhythms, such as milonga, guajira, bossa nova, and samba, in this setting, " says Franzetti. "I'm very grateful to MSM and the great MSM Jazz Orchestra, as well as to the outstanding maestro, Justin DiCioccio, who invited me to premiere this suite with them, " adds Puccini.
