2016-17 Manhattan School of Music Jazz Arts Season

The Manhattan School of Music (MSM) 2016-17 Jazz Arts program announces its 2016-17 season, featuring tribute concerts to American jazz greats Charlie Parker, Gil Evans, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Buddy Rich; a concert of all-new music from the MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra; and a special Latin-Jazz interpretation of music from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, celebrating the iconic Broadway show's 60th Anniversary. And classical meets jazz in October 2016 when renowned Argentine classical guitarist Sergio Puccini joins the MSM Concert Jazz Band for a New York premiere by award-winning composer, Carlos Franzetti (Justin DiCioccio, Music Director).

A full listing of the Jazz Arts schedule will be available at msmnyc.edu in September 2016.

Performances will take place at MSM's Neidorff-Karpati Hall (previously John C. Borden Auditorium) and Ades Performance Space at 122nd Street and Broadway, and at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

MSM JAZZ PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Charlie Parker had long wanted to record with strings and finally won over producer Norman Granz, recording two albums of jazz standards with a mixed group of jazz and chamber musicians. Parker's lush artistry floated above these beautiful settings on standards "Just Friends, " "Everything Happens to Me, " "April in Paris, " and others. This program features guest soloist Vince Herring in a rare performance of these legendary string arrangements, originally recorded between 1949 and 1952.

Award-winning composer Carlos Franzetti draws on diverse inspirations and styles for In the Key of Jazz, commissioned for renowned Argentine classical guitarist Sergio Puccini. A large-scale composition in four movements, it is one of the rare works featuring classical guitar with jazz orchestra.

Gil Evans crafted the 10 different pieces on Miles Davis's classic Miles Ahead LP into a suite that, along with Evans' and Davis' successive masterpieces Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain, is one of the most treasured jazz works of all time. MSM Artist in Residence and NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman, who sits in on soprano sax, has previously performed these Evans-Davis collaborations in concert with the MSM Jazz Orchestra; his approach to this music is to "concentrate on tone and color and, above all, be lyrical."

West Side Story had its premiere on Broadway in 1957, redefining American musical theatre and searing into the popular imagination. The MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra will present new Latin-jazz arrangements of Leonard Bernstein's timeless score.

MSM CHAMBER JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Irish jazz composer Ronan Guilfoyle composed his chamber work The Long Road to celebrate Dave Liebman's 70th birthday. This piece is a tribute to the unique sound world that Liebman has carved out for himself, and for longtime colleagues such as pianist Phil Markowitz (also featured in this concert).

Manhattan School of Music is one of the first conservatories in the United States to acknowledge the importance of jazz as an art form by establishing undergraduate and graduate degree programs in jazz. It is also one of the richest programs of its kind, thanks to systematic and rigorous conservatory training combined with a myriad of performance and networking opportunities in New York City. In addition to a variety of small combos, student ensembles include the Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, Concert Jazz Band, Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Philharmonic, and Chamber Jazz Orchestra. Under the leadership of longtime faculty member and eminent jazz artist-and-educator Justin DiCioccio, the program strives to produce students who perform, compose, and teach with equal facility and passion.

About MANHATTAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC

Founded as a settlement music school by Janet Daniels Schenck in 1918, today Manhattan School of Music is recognized for its 950 superbly talented undergraduate and graduate students who come from more than 50 countries and nearly all 50 states; a world-renowned artist-teacher faculty; and innovative curricula. The School is dedicated to the personal, artistic, and intellectual development of aspiring musicians, from its Precollege students through those pursuing postgraduate studies.

Offering both classical and jazz training – and, beginning in fall 2016, a Bachelor's degree program in musical theater – MSM grants Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees, as well as the Professional Studies Certificate and Artist Diploma.
