| 2016-17 Manhattan School of Music Jazz Arts Season The Manhattan School of Music (MSM) 2016-17 Jazz Arts program announces its 2016-17 season, featuring tribute concerts to American jazz greats Charlie Parker, Gil Evans, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Buddy Rich; a concert of all-new music from the MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra; and a special Latin-Jazz interpretation of music from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, celebrating the iconic Broadway show's 60th Anniversary. And classical meets jazz in October 2016 when renowned Argentine classical guitarist Sergio Puccini joins the MSM Concert Jazz Band for a New York premiere by award-winning composer, Carlos Franzetti (Justin DiCioccio, Music Director). Parker's lush artistry floated above these beautiful settings on standards "Just Friends, " "Everything Happens to Me, " "April in Paris, " and others. This program features guest soloist Vince Herring in a rare performance of these legendary string arrangements, originally recorded between 1949 and 1952. MSM Artist in Residence and NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman, who sits in on soprano sax, has previously performed these Evans-Davis collaborations in concert with the MSM Jazz Orchestra; his approach to this music is to "concentrate on tone and color and, above all, be lyrical." The MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra will present new Latin-jazz arrangements of Leonard Bernstein's timeless score. RONAN GUILFOYLE: THE LONG ROAD A 70th Birthday Tribute to MSM Artist in Residence Dave Leibman Thursday, April 13, 7:30 PM, Ades Performance Space Justin DiCioccio, Music Director Guest Artists: Dave Liebman, saxophone; Phil Markowitz, piano MSM CHAMBER JAZZ ENSEMBLE Irish jazz composer Ronan Guilfoyle composed his chamber work The Long Road to celebrate Dave Liebman's 70th birthday. This piece is a tribute to the unique sound world that Liebman has carved out for himself, and for longtime colleagues such as pianist Phil Markowitz (also featured in this concert). About MSM JAZZ ARTS Manhattan School of Music is one of the first conservatories in the United States to acknowledge the importance of jazz as an art form by establishing undergraduate and graduate degree programs in jazz.
