92Y Jazz In July Festival 2016 Season

92Y's 32nd annual Jazz in July festival, with artistic director Bill Charlap at the helm, runs from Tuesday, July 19 through Thursday, July 28, bringing together some of the world's finest jazz players. Jazz in July opens with Summertime Swing Party, a concert modeled after the legendary "Jazz at the Philharmonic" series, and includes the return of Freddy Cole in the festival's tribute to his brother, the Jazz in July debut of acclaimed guitarist Gene Bertoncini, and a rare New York appearance by vocalist Carol Sloane in Take the A Train: Billy Strayhorn at 100.

Bill Charlap has performed and recorded with many of the leading jazz artists of our time and won a Grammy this year – with Tony Bennett – for their album The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern. Charlap was appointed Director of Jazz Studies at William Patterson University in September, 2015.

Recent Festival shows have explored be-bop and Latin jazz; celebrated jazz legend Jimmy Heath and former artistic director Dick Hyman; and sampled the work of great composers, from Cole Porter to Thelonious Monk. Recent line-ups have featured jazz greats Ray Bryant, Barry Harris, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, Trio Da Paz, and Frank Wess. The Jazz in July summer festival is partially endowed by a generous gift from Simona and Jerome A. Chazen. 92Y Jazz is underwritten by Gilda and Henry Block and Kenneth Kolker z"l.
