| ECHOES OF SWING - New 'Dancing' reviews  More enthusiastic Echo from the international press:Echoes of Swing - a contagious delight! DOWNBEAT, Frank John Hadley Another outstanding album from this versatile and creative group: The excellent and detailed arrangements are performed with meticulous skill, infused with intense collective flair, making the quartet sound much bigger. With its intriguing fresh-spin approach to the vintage jazz legacy and high standard of performance, this international quartet deserves high praise and widespread recognition. JAZZ JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL, Hugh Rainey This extraordinary band take earlier forms of jazz and do radical things to them. It's not done to mock or parody them in any way, but to coax out hidden delights and add a few of their own. It's witty and stimulating, and it depends on the superb musicianship of just four players - their pinpoint accuracy of timing and tonal delicacy, not to mention originality and sheer instrumental technique. I know of nothing else quite like it. THE GUARDIAN, Dave Gelly Across a couple of decades and seven albums Echoes Of Swing, a quartet based in Germany, has been inspired by swing music, while adding a contemporary twist. The band's most inspired take on a much-loved favorite is the waltz-time "Charleston"—a great ensemble performance and a rhythmical shift that threatens the cruciate ligaments of swing dancers the world over. ALL ABOUT JAZZ, Bruce Lindsay The wonderful quartet ECHOES OF SWING is often compared to the John Kirby Sextet, and with some justification. They both create intricate lines; they turn corners adeptly at top speed; they like surprises; they often play with classical themes. But I need to write a heresy here. Stand back. I think ECHOES OF SWING has well and truly outstripped its ancestor: they are satisfying in ways the Kirby group couldn't have imagined. There! I've said it. JAZZ LIVES, Michael Steinmann For about 20 years now, the German quartet Echoes of Swing has been celebrating (and sometimes gently subverting) the traditions of pre-bop jazz. They're not revivalists, really–it's more that they see no reason not to treat trad and swing-era jazz as a living and breathing musical genre. That fact may explain the unusual profusion of original compositions on this, the group's eighth album. This whole album is a joy. CD HOT LIST, Rick Anderson It takes the certain skill this crew has to turn the clock back without making things sound retro but keeping the spirit of the vibe in tact. They even do that with the new, originally written tunes they mix in to the chestnuts. A smashing set that is just a gasser to hear, one of the smartest jazz ensembles going has hit new heights again. Killer stuff throughout. MIDWEST RECORD, Chris Spector Mainstream jazz is rare these days, so it's particularly gratifying that a group such as Echoes can keep the genre alive. Better still is the fresh and innovative approach of this CD that shows jazz of this kind need not just repeat the tired phrases of old but bring a whole different perspective to the music. SOFTER SOUNDS OF JAZZ, Ken Meades This is the second album on ACT, by this Europe based group of mainstreamers to come my way for review. There had been five more before. So we can take it that their distinctive re-evaluation of small group swing of the late 1930s is a success. The personnel unchanged, each album using the same pared-down instrumentation. The chosen themes cleverly arranged and executed. The care and forethought in these performances suggest a close study of the John Kirby Sextet, with their formality, and tightly controlled outcomes uppermost in these performances. JAZZ WISE, Peter Vacher Echoes of Swing, a superb mainstream quartet based in Germany - intelligent and unique interpretations: these are terrific musicians who make you tap your feet and smile! JERSEY JAZZ, Joe Lang This is nothing like Traditional Jazz as we know it - these musicians have taken it to another dimension. JUST JAZZ, Neville Dickie Un album qui fait du neuf avec du vieux, et qui le fait bien ! OUEST-FRANCE, Yvan Duvivier Nouveaute. Meme si on l'oublie volontiers aujourd'hui, la danse a longtemps étè consubstantielle au jazz. C'est un fait avéré dès les origines. Charleston, ragtime, foxtrot, lindy top, la musique et son expression corporelle ont longtemps suivi un développement et une évolution parallèles avant que I'apparition du bop ne consomme le divorce. Cette conjonction originelle, le quartette Echoes of Swing i'illustre éloquement. Non par le ressassement, mais par une recreation qui s'attache plus à I'esprit qu'a la Iettre. Ainsi de thèmes aussi connotés qu' Original Dixieland One Step, ou encore Charleston, de James P. Johnson. Voire Premier Bal de Bechet ou Moonlight Serenade de Glenn Miller. Ils bénéficient d'arrangements fouillés qui les transfigurent. Plus insolite encore, la gavotte extraite de la Suite anglaise No 6 de Bach qui s'intègre parfaitement à un répertoire fondé sur le swing. Un tel travail de dépoussiérage n'est rendu possible que par la cohésion d'un groupe crée en Allemagne en1997 et qui en est à son septième album. Ses membres comptent parmi Ies meilleurs musiciens européens, du Franco-Allemnand Bernd Lhotzky, spécialiste du stride, au batteur allemand Oliver Mewes en passant par le trompettiste et chanteur anglaise Colin T. Dawson et l'alto americain Chris Hopkins.Bel exemple de I'universalité du jazz. Es wird so frisch geswingt, als sprudele die Quelle dieser Musik nicht schon seit 100 Jahren. Auch auf 'Dancing' lässt das Ensemble Songs aus der Jazz-Frühzeit auferstehen, bietet dazu aber auch artfremde Arrangements sowie Eigenkompositionen, ohne die Stile an die Wand zu fahren. WESTDEUTSCHE ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG. Jürgen Boebers-Süssmann Echoes of Swing führen eine feine Klinge - beste Unterhaltung auf humorvolle Art mit brillantem Spiel, finessenreichem Charme und spürbarer Spielfreude. Im nicht gerade unterdotierten Bereich des swingenden Mainstream ist die Musik dieses Albums nicht zu toppen. JAZZTHETIK, Rolf Thomas Ohrenglück - das 'Swing-Orchester aus der Nussschale': Fantasie, Humor, Raffinesse, Innovation, gute Laune und intelligente Unterhaltung. KULTKOMPLOTT, Hans-Jürgen Schaal In erfrischender Art und Weise beschäftigen sich die 'Echoes of Swing' mit einem Repertoire zwischen Swing, Ragtime, Walzer, Charleston und sogar Carioca. Wer jetzt glaubt, dass sich die Band nur an Standards schadlos hält, der irrt. Zu klug und versiert sind die Herren, deren musikalisches Können (und Enthusiasmus) völlig außer Frage steht, dass sie diese Herausforderung nicht bravourös meistern. So gibt es zahlreiche Überraschungen wie spannende Tempowechsel und 'schräge Elemente'. Zudem bereichern sie das Repertoire noch um einige Eigenkompositionen. Eine wirklich klasse CD! CONCERTO, Wolfgang Weitlaner Alle vier Bandmitglieder sind ausgezeichnete Instrumentalisten und in der Lage die zum Teil verflixt vertrackten Arrangements ihres Albums perfekt umzusetzen. Sie komponieren im dezent modifizierten Idiom der frühen Jahre des Genres und adaptieren souverän Melodien von Bach bis Joplin. JAZZ THING, Ralf Dombrowski Die Echoes Of Swing verstehen es großartig, den Swing der 20er- und 30er-Jahre nostalgiefrei ´rüberzubringen, ihn mit anderen Musikstilen zu verbinden und ganz modern, ja: ´cool´ klingen zu lassen. FONO FORUM, Dr. Berthold Klostermann Pure Lust am Musizieren - ein modernes Ballett durch die Jazzgeschichte. HOLSTEINISCHER KURIER, Klaus Merz Ein Glanzstück in bester Swingtradition: Die vier Musiker von Echoes of Swing machen glücklicherweise vor kaum etwas Halt. Müssen sie auch nicht, denn Johann Sebastian Bachs Englische Suiten swingen in ihrer Bearbeitung genauso wie Nummern von Sidney Bechet, Cole Porter oder ihre wunderbaren Eigenkompositionen. WDR-RESONANZEN, Sebastian von Haugwitz Seit fast zwei Jahrzehnten widmen sich die vier Musiker dem Entstauben von Swingmusik und anderen älteren Jazzstilen bis hin zur Klassik. Im aktuellen Repertoire wird die Auswahl neu arrangierter Stücke zu einem Drittel um eigene Kompositionen ergänzt. Damit erreicht das Ensemble einen neuen Höchststand an Originalen.
