June is Jazz Month in New York City - there are many opportunities to hit the streets, enjoy the weather and hear some of the great music that's being presented all over town.

But one of the most exclusive and special events will happen this Saturday evening, June 11th at a little club in midtown. One of the world's premier percussionists, multiple Grammy nominee Sammy Figueroa, will be appearing at bassist Richard Bona's premier venue Club Bonafide, along with Venezuelan maestros Silvano Monasterios on piano and Gabriel Vivas on bass and Ludwig Afonso on drums. Sammy is also joined by the up and coming Cuban saxophonist, Carlos Averhoff, Jr.

Sammy is well-known as a sideman: he's played with Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, the Brecker Brothers, David Bowie, Mariah Carey and countless others. But it's as a leader of this very special ensemble that Sammy shines. Sammy surrounds himself with musicians and arrangers of the highest level of excellence. His shows are always entertaining, interspersing great music with his own brand of humor and audience rapport.

On this occasion Sammy is honored to be joined by the illustrious trumpet player Brian Lynch. After many years of playing with Eddie Palmieri, gaining honor and Grammy Awards with his own ensemble, Brian is now a tenured professor at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Sammy and Brian have been talking about collaborating for quite awhile and this is their first opportunity.

Monasterios and Vivas have created a repertoire of original music around Sammy's spectacular percussion which embodies dizzying rhythms, spectacular solos and a large dash of beautiful harmony and melody. This music can be heard on Sammy's albums on Savant Records, two of which have been honored with Grammy Nominations.

As Sonny Rollins has said, "There is no better percussionist". As Sammy's old friend, the late and very much missed Larry Rosen once said about this band "It just doesn't get better than this". Come catch Sammy in this rare appearance at one of New York's best listening venues with some of the best musicians in Latin jazz today.
