Grammy-Nominated International Jazz Star To Headline Concert. Institute of Jazz Studies to welcome NEA Jazz Master and 14-time Grammy nominee Toshiko Akiyoshi with Lew Tabackin. Rutgers-Newark, 15 Washington Street; 2:30-4 pm (Free Admission) Wednesday, March 23, 2016: Toshiko Akiyoshi – Lew Tabackin Quartet Toshiko Akiyoshi's recordings have received a total of 14 Grammy Award nominations. A perennial Down Beat poll winner, Toshiko has also received the Shijahosho (1999, from the Emperor of Japan); the Japan Foundation Award, Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosetta (2004, from the Emperor of Japan); and the Asahi Award (2005, from the Asahi Shimbun newspaper). In 2007, she was named an NEA Jazz Master, America's most prestigious jazz honor. In 2002 Toshiko retired her big band projects and returned to the piano, touring as a trio and sometimes a quartet with her husband, tenor saxophone/flute star Lew Tabackin.
