| NY Klezmer Series Move To Mehanata, New Series Beginning Please join us on Oct. 21, 2015 for the Opening Night of our Fall 2015 Series, as we inaugurate our new location on the Lower East Side: Mehanata Bulgarian Bar. Featuring Alex Kontorovich & Goldenshteyn Memorial Band w/Dance leading by Avia Moore. Alex Kontorovich – clarinet; Jake Shulman-Ment – violin; Mike Cohen – tenor saxophone, Matt Darriau – alto saxophone, Patrick Farrell – accordion, Brian Glassman – bass, Aaron Alexander – drums Alex Kontorovich is one of the top klezmer clarinetists in the world, although his day job (as a professor of mathematics) keeps him somewhat limited in his music schedule. A founder of the Klez Dispensers, he has also recorded and produced two CDs of the music of German Goldenshteyn (one of which is the only CD Goldenshteyn ever recorded), and a CD of original music entitled "Deep Minor." Kontorovich has performed and recorded all over the world with such artists at The Klezmatics, Beyond the Pale, Fyvush Finkel, King Django, Boban Markovic', Frank London's Klezmer Brass All-Stars, Aaron Alexander's Midrash Mish Mosh, and many others. He was on staff for years at Living Traditions "Klez Kamp", at Klez Kanada, and at Yiddish Summer Weimar. Here he brings together a wonderful group of klezmorim to pay tribute to the legacy and repertoire of German Goldenshteyn, in an opening night concert/dance party. This will not be so much of a dance-teaching as much as a party with music and dance to celebrate our new venue, Mehanata, which has great food and drinks and a lively, funky and fun atmosphere. Originally The East Village Klezmer Series, we moved to the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in 2013. Now we will be relocating to Mehanata Bulgarian Bar in the Lower East Side. There are several advantages to this location which we think will enhance the series, allow it to grow and make it more accessible to some of our regular attendees and artists. We present music concerts, music and dance workshops, and open klezmer jam sessions in an intimate setting. Founded by Rabbi Greg Wall and Aaron Alexander, and inspired by the week-long Yiddish Culture events, Klez Kamp, and Klez Kanada, the NYKS aspires to present the music in a respectful setting and allow the artists freedom to present their vision. The series consistently presents world class artists in an intimate setting, in addition to providing education and a place for all to come and participate in this wonderful and often neglected part of Jewish and American Culture. Klezmer music is the instrumental party music of the Jewish People from Eastern Europe – (Ashkenazim). It's origins are in the 16th century, and it has evolved and assimilated local influences (Russian, Romanian, Ottoman, Hungarian etc.) wherever Ashkenazim have lived since. It is essentially Yiddish music – the instrumental music of people who spoke (and speak) Yiddish. It came to America with the immigration of Jews from Eastern Europe beginning in late 19th century, and has had a wonderful history in America, where it also assimilated American music traditions. Hasidic nigunim (wordless melodies), Yiddish theater music and Yiddish folk song are all related and will be represented at the series. Tantsheiser (Dance Parties): Once a month or so we present a Tantshoyz – Yiddish dance party, with a Yiddish Dance specialist, and a professional dance band. Past dance leaders have included Steve Weintraub, Michael Alpert, Zev Feldman, Avia Moore, and Deborah Strauss. We have a Klezmer Instrumental Workshop every Tuesday that we have a concert, often led by the concert artists of the day, or by Artistic Director Aaron Alexander. This workshop has been running for over four years and has developed a devoted following. We work on repertoire, style, form, ornamentation, groove and more. Often the participants have an opportunity to play the current pieces at the jam session after the concert, further deepening their mastery of the new material.
