| Brooklyn's 'Matterhorn' Soars With New Album, Midwestern Tour Young lion of the new jazz strata, John Blevins, will lead his ensemble, Matterhorn, on a Midwestern tour celebrating the band's eponymous CD and LP release on pfMENTUM records. The music reflects both the jazz-rock experiments of the late 1960s and an undeniable urgency of New York right now. Strains of electric Miles if not the Electric Flag are present within Matterhorn's daring soundscape. But then there is something other. John Blevins (Trumpet/ Compositions), Drew Williams (Tenor Saxophone/Bass Clarinet), Brad Mulholland (Alto Saxophone/Clarinet/Flute), Nick Grinder (Trombone), Jeff McLaughlin (Guitar), Marta Sanchez (Fender Rhodes), Marty Kenney (Bass), Nathan Ellman-Bell (Drums) and John Doing (Congas) together create a pronounced restlessness of genre, one of explosive horn lines searing through churning, ever-shifting rhythmic patterns. If this music is to be classified as 'Fusion', it stands as a genre anew. The compositions of Blevins, a member of the adjunct faculty of New York University with a long list of performance credits, liberates the members of Matterhorn with improvisational sections within the written score. Matterhorn is a tumultuous quest for a truly post-Modern Jazz, one which boldly brandishes ethnic traditions and devices from alternative rock as naturally as burning swing and Kentonesque tapestries. The band will disembark on November 7 from Blevins' adopted home of Brooklyn NY and travel to his original base of Indiana before coursing through Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri and Michigan. This leg of the tour will conclude on the stage of the Rockwood Music Hall on New York's Lower East Side, reclaiming the spirit of rebellion that the area has long generated. Plans are being laid now for a winter tour of the East Coast followed by hits in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland. Specifics of the Midwest Tour are below.
