His Hot Five sides with Louis Armstrong are historic masterpieces, and the Armstrong-Hines duo "Weather Bird" is one of jazz's high-watermarks. He went on to lead the first be-bop big band with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker as band members. Hines kept up with the times throughout his career, absorbing and assimilating every new style. Here Hines flows from Dixie to stride and swing, from rocking rhythm and blues to free-wheeling contemporary. Earl Hines - Duet Earl Hines is seen as the "Fatha" of modern jazz piano (see Fatha and His Flock), while Jaki Byard is best known for his play on some of Charles Mingus' greatest albums. Hines was a major influence on the 15 year younger Byard, one of the reasons Jaki had such a deep-rooted understanding for tradition. Eddie Louiss - Our Kind Of Sabi The brilliant French Hammond organist and pianist Eddy Louiss worked with the likes of Kenny Clarke, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Stan Getz; reed player John Surman and drummer Daniel Humair have long been major forces on the European scene. Louiss also recorded the title piece on Stan Getz's "Dynasty" album – here the trio presents a wilder version with fiery solos from Surman's baritone and Louiss on Hammond. This trio likes their Sabi hot with a Spanish tinge. write your comments about the article :: © 2015 Jazz News :: home page |
