| MPS Records - Supersax, The Horst Jankowski Orchestra, The Hagaw Association, Chicago Blues All Stars MPS Records New Digital Releases Digital Mastered for iTunes Distribution: Edel:Kultur/ Kontor New Media Releases: August 14th, 2015 (Exclusively on iTunes) Supersax - Chasin' The Bird After Louis Armstrong, alto saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker was arguably the most important innovator in jazz. His creativity and virtuosity revolutionized the music and ushered in the modern era. The Grammy award-winning group Supersax were a group of ace LA musicians who dedicated themselves to transcribing and playing Parker's solos – a prodigious task that allows for a new listen to some of Bird's masterful improvisations. Two altos, two tenors, and a baritone sax take on the challenge. The nine tracks concentrate on originals from Parker and fellow iconoclast Dizzy Gillespie. Supersax - Dynamite!! Supersax is known for their miraculous renderings of Charlie Parker solos (see Chasin' The Bird). They're still flyin' high with two 'Bird' pieces – his Blues For Alice once again denotes Parker's mastery of the blues. And then there's Parker's Mood, a slow blues that contains one of Bird's most venerated solos, beautifully reproduced by the five saxes. Here the group expands, taking on three compositions and solos from the bebop giant, pianist Bud Powell. His The Fruit has the saxes demonstrating why Powell's solo style revolutionized the approach to the piano. The Horst Jankowski Orchestra - Jaques Offenbach in Paris The French-German Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) is credited as the founder of the modern operetta. German jazz pianist Horst Jankowski takes the listener on a light-hearted tour of Offenbach's Paris environs. Jankowski worked with the likes of Tony Scott and Benny Goodman in the 50's before he moved on to become an internationally renowned big band leader. His A Walk in the Black Forest became an international hit, selling over one million copies and reaching #1 on the US easy listening charts. This album offers Infectious jazz and Latin-laced music with lush string and horn arrangements by Mladen "Bobby" Gresha, a top-flight arranger who has worked for Jan Garbarek and Keith Jarrett on ECM. The Hagaw Association - Happy Hagaw How to describe this Polish band, this music? Bandleader Grzegorz Brudko explains, "You simply can't call our music 'traditional'. We play in Hagaw style." Call it trad, old-time, swing; it's irreverent, comedic, with musical antics that straddle the line between party music and German cabaret. There is music in their madness, however. Solitude shows their serious side with a beautiful arrangement that would have pleased Ellington. Chicago Blues All Stars - Loaded With The Blues A must-have for blues lovers! This album is a collaboration of four of the foremost Mississippi Delta blues players who carried their music to Chicago, and in so doing helped shape the sound of the blues in post WWII America. Bassist Willie Dixon leads the Allstars; credited alongside Muddy Waters as the most influential player behind the blues renaissance of the 50's and 60's, Dixon was also a major songwriter whose songs were recorded by Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Dylan, Hendrix, the Doors, the Stones, etc. write your comments about the article :: © 2015 Jazz News :: home page |
