Possessing a golden-warm, crystal-pure sound and prodigious technique, he worked with the Ellington and Basie Bands as well as most of the major players of the last 50 years, participating in over 900 recordings. Terry was also an important mentor to the likes of the young Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, and Quincy Jones. In 2010 he received a Grammy for life-time achievement. This amazing album has Terry backed by a 50-piece orchestra featuring the cream of London's session musicians, including 28 strings. The album contains 12 classic ballads Miriam Klein - Ladylike // 1973 - Miriam Klein (Vocals), Billy Brooks (Drums), Oscar Klein (Guitar), Vince Benedetti (Piano), Dexter Gordon (Saxophone), Slide Hampton (Trombone), Roy Eldridge (Trumpet) Singer Miriam Klein's claim to fame lies in the uncanny similarity of her voice and phrasing to that of one of the legends of the music, Billie Holiday. Critic Leonard feather commented that she "suggests a later Billie but without the weaknesses". For Holiday devotees and the curious, that might be enough to interest them in these sides. However there is much more that these recordings have to offer: tenor saxophone giant Dexter Gordon, trombone great Slide Hampton, and trumpet legend Roy "Little Jazz" Eldridge, who played on some of Billie's classic 1930's recordings Richard Davis - Muses For Richard Davis // 1969 - Richard Davis (Bass), Jerry Dodgion (Alto Saxophone), Pepper Adams (Baritone Saxophone), Louis Hayes (Drums), Roland Hanna (Piano), Eddie Daniels (Tenor Saxophone), Jimmy Knepper (Trombone), Freddie Hubbard (Trumpet) Richard Davis has been a major force on the bass from the 1960's on. At home with classical, jazz, and pop, he has worked with Ahmed Jamal, Sarah Vaughn, Van Morrison ("the greatest bass ever heard on a rock album" – Rolling Stone), Bruce Springstein, and was on the legendary Eric Dolphy Live at the Five Spot albums. Pianist Roland Hanna's work as a sideman was prolific; he played with such greats as Charles Mingus and Jim Hall. A supremely original trombonist, Jimmy Knepper was a stalwart in various incarnations of Mingus bands Karel Velebny - SHQ & Woodwinds / Nonet // 1968 - Karel Vejvoda (Bass), Pavel Zedník (Bassoon), Josef Vejvoda (Drums), Miroslav Krýsl (Clarinet), Jiří Stivín (Flute), Miloš Petr (French Horn), Vlastimil Kála (Oboe), Luděk Švábenský (Piano), Karel Velebný (Vibraphone) Czech multi-instrumentalist-composer Karel Velebny was a major force in the emergence of Czechoslovakia onto the international jazz scene in the 1960's. Appearances at the Berlin Jazz Days in 1964 and subsequent tours throughout Western Europe led to his group's (HSQ) breakthrough. Here the group is augmented by four woodwinds.
