| HONK! Festival 2015: 10th Annual .... dates set for October 9-11 Time to mark the calendar for this year's milestonetenth annual HONK! Festival (www.honkfest.org), based in Davis Sq. Somerville, with events happening from October 9-11 throughout the neighborhoods of Somerville, as well as in Cambridge and Boston. HONK! is a rousing socio-political music spectacle which features social activist street bands from all over the world, who come together to share their different approaches to merrily instigating positive change in their communities. Many HONK!s have surfaced throughout the world since the original HONK! was founded in 2006 in Davis Square by members of the Somerville-based Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band (www.secondlinebrassband.org). HONK!s are now yearly gatherings inProvidence, New York City, Seattle, Austin, and Detroit, as well as in Australia and Brazil. A year round HONK! presence has been established locally with the founding of the School of HONK! in Somerville, comprised of bothexperienced musicians, as well as those who are brand new to music-making. That musical cross-pollination adds extraoomph to this year's prediction that the 10th anniversary will be the biggest HONK! ever in terms of number of bands participating and the scope of activities planned throughout the area. The full list of participating bands, along with an overview of all activities taking place, will be available soon after Labor Day weekend. But local HONK! fans can once again plan on thedefinites ... bopping around amidst rich musical mayhem and jumping right into the spectacularly large "Reclaim the Streets for Horns, Bikes, and Feet" Parade. ALL HONK! events take place rain or shine, and are free, open to all. [Rude Mechanical Orchestra; photo credit: Jamie Favaro] write your comments about the article :: © 2015 Jazz News :: home page |
