| MPS Records - 3xHans Koller & 2xHannibal - Exclusively Mastered for iTunes. The New York Times dubbed him "the Mohammed Ali of jazz trumpet players". Born in 1948, Texas trumpeter Hannibal came to fame in the early 70's from his work and records with the legendary Gil Evans Orchestra, drummer Roy Haynes' band, and Pharaoh Sanders. His oratorio African Portraits was recorded by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Barenboim. "Hannibal In Berlin" The album was recorded live at the 1976 Berlin Jazz Festival. Pianist Cochrane and cellist Murray are once again on board, and tenor saxophonist George Adams, whose work in Charles Mingus' last great band had already put him on the map, is a welcome addition. "Hannibal" This 1975 recording feature two players who would remain mainstays in Hannibal's future groups. Pianist Michael Cochrane had already worked with two of the greatest drummers of the era, Tony Williams and Billy Hart. Cellist Diedre Murray had done duty with Archie Shepp and Alice Coltrane. Born in Vienna in 1921, multi-saxophonist Hans Koller was a seminal figure in post-war European jazz. A prodigious player, he worked with Stan Kenton, Lee Konitz, formed a group with Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke, and created one of the first fusion groups. Koller received numerous requests by American musicians to emigrate to the States, but decided to remain in Europe. His play and compositions, a combination of experimentation and an adherence to tradition, catapulted him to the forefront of the European scene. "Relax With My Horns" and "Vision" Recorded in 1966, Relax With My Horns and Vision are companion albums set in trio. Koller shares some of the compositional and arrangement work with Viennese Hans Rettenbacher, who was one of the most sought after bassists on the European scene, as his work with the likes of Eric Dolphy and Don Ellis can attest. Berliner drummer Rafi Lüderitz's sojourn in the USA in 1958 saw him playing with such greats as Coleman Hawkins and Ted Curson. Although trio albums, Koller overdubs as many as four horns, playing both tenor and alto, and Rettenbacher occasionally sits in on piano as an extra voice. The results resonate more as an ultra-hip saxophone choir-come big band than an intimate trio. Read more about "Relax With My Horns" and read more about "Vision". "For Marcel Duchamp" Recorded in 1976, the album offers up Koller at his free-playing best. A stellar band provides the color: German guitarist Eddy Maron, known for his ability to mix elements of jazz, rock, and the Mid-East; Jürgen Wuchner, celebrated for his work with Heinz Sauer, and the Vienna Art Orchestra; drummer Janusz Stefański, one of a slew of top-flight Polish musicians who immigrated to Germany during the Soviet era.
