| MPS Records Exclusively Mastered for iTunes. Dear Media Partners, this week out! Three wonderfull new MPS Records re-issues. Globe Unity If you are into free jazz this is an essential album! An insight into what was going on in European free jazz scene at the height of the movement, Global Unity presents the who's who of German and European free jazz: Dutchman Willem Breuker, Germans Karl Berger, Gunter Hampel, Peter Brötzmann, Peter Kovald, Manfred Schoof, and the orchestra's leader, composer-pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach. Von Schlippenbach's compositions revolve around loosely organized structures, allowing maximal freedom in conjunction within the musicians' role as "instantaneous composer". The music reflects influences from such earlier ground-breaking albums as Ornette's Free Jazz, and Coltrane's Ascension as well as contemporary European classical. Vicissitudes When it comes to proselytizing the message of bebop, pianist Barry Harris is an institution unto himself. For well over a half century he has been preaching the gospel of Bird, Bud and Monk. This 1972 recording features bassist George Duvivier and drummer Leroy Williams, veterans of the Big Apple's music wars who worked and recorded with most of the greats of the post-bop generation. The trio plays hand-in glove on 6 Harris compositions, two bop classics, and one standard. Vicissitudes is played with a med. swing in the classical bop tradition. Ultra Native A hidden gem that sparkles in the light of day. Serbian keyboardist-composer Bora Rokovic has dropped into obscurity, but in his heyday he recorded with the likes of Stan Getz, Dusko Goykovic, and arranged for the popular WDR Big Band. An original stylist Rokovic overflows with ideas and has the chops to express them. Ultra Native has been a collector's item, and for good reason. This 1971 trio date includes the great German bassist Peter Trunk. Jazz critic Joachim Ernst Berendt placed Trunk as "the best German bassist in jazz", and Attila Zoller remarked that he was "as good as the best bassists America has to offer". American drummer Tony Inzalaco has worked with the who's who of both Europe and the USA. Man of the Light Polish Violinist Zbignew Seiferts was a musician's musician, a player who is still talked about with a sense of awe. By the time of his death in 1979 at the age of 32, he had an international following and was playing with the jazz world's elite. This 1976 recording features some of the music's premiere musicians. U.S. drummer Billy Hart ranks with such innovators as Elvin Jones and Tony Williams; master bassist Cecil McBee's credentials include work with Miles Davis and Kieth Jarrett. Best known for his own work, renowned German pianist Joachim Kühn has played with the likes of Michael Brecker and Ornette Coleman. write your comments about the article :: © 2015 Jazz News :: home page |
