It presents young talents (ages 16 - 26) working closely as apprentices with top professionals, some of whom were actual members of the original band 'Steps Ahead' (Steps). This CD features The Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra (SYJO) directed by Fritz K Renold playing eight original tunes written by the director in the style of 'Steps Ahead' as well as one ('Beirut') written by Steps' founder Mike Mainieri, all in a big band setting featuring soloists among the professionals and youth players. The orchestra rehearsed for a week at the Jazzaar Festival. The premier performance was recorded live on April 12, 2014. The tunes were arranged and orchestrated for the SYJO by Gil Goldstein, Christian Jacob, Jamshied Sharifi, Bob Freedman, Corey Allen and Fritz K Renold. The Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra earned a high score with this ambitious program in honor of Steps Ahead! The Aargauer Zeitung Nordwestschweiz Indeed a star-studded performance, but the biggest star was the young orchestra.
