Steve Earle, Catherine Russell to perform at 17Days Festival

Singers Steve Earle, Catherine Russell and Jane Monheit will be among those performing at the 17Days Festival, Sept. 19 through Oct. 5. Entering its fourth year, 17Days, hosted by ArtsGreensboro, has become the state's largest collaborative arts and culture festival. It will feature more than 100 events, exhibitions, and performances produced by more than 70 organizations, artists, and venues.

"These concerts will appeal to a wide range of music-lovers, " ArtsGreensboro President and CEO Tom Philion said in a news release.

The concerts include:

Steve Earle: Alone and Acoustic: 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Carolina Theatre, 310 S. Greene St. Laurelyn Dossett will open. A protégé of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Earle has written songs recorded by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, The Pretenders and Joan Baez.

Dave McCracken & Friends: A Benefit for the Interactive Resource Center: 8 p.m. Sept. 25 at The Blind Tiger, 1819 Spring Garden St. The Healing Blues Project will open. This benefit concert features Donna The Buffalo keyboard player Dave McCracken, bandmates Kyle Spark and Mark Raudabaugh, Sam Frazier (Tornado), Jason Blalock and Shane Lee (Folkswaggin'), Casey Cranford (Big Something) and other special guests.

Catherine Russell and Her Trio: 8 p.m. Sept. 26 at The Crown, the third-floor performance space at the Carolina Theatre. A 2012 Grammy Award-winner for her appearance as a featured artist on the "Boardwalk Empire" soundtrack, Catherine Russell dropped her fifth album, "Bring It Back, " this year. A jazz and blues singer, Russell will perform her own songs as well as beloved standards by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith and Dinah Washington. Tom Principato: 9 p.m. Sept. 26, at The Blind Tiger. Logie Meachum will open. Principato has spent more than 40 years as a Washington, D.C.-based electric blues and blues-rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He has recorded more than 20 albums. His 2013 release, "Robert Johnson Told Me So, " features keyboard work by Chuck Leavell. Tickets are available at theblindtiger.com/tickets.htm or at The Blind Tiger.

Jane Monheit Celebrates the Jazz of Judy Garland: 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Carolina Theatre. "Judy did so much more than break hearts, " Monheit, a two-time Grammy nominee, said in the press release.
