| Birch Creek Presents the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp This is the camp for aspiring vocalists looking to take their vocal jazz chops to another level. The Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp, founded in 1989, provides a unique educational experience for an intensified, one-week course of study and skills development conducted by an outstanding artist faculty of professional performing and recording artists. Cited by Jazziz Magazine as "among the most innovative and dynamic summer jazz educational programs in the country, " the camp has been featured on the PBS national news program "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, " HDNET-TV, WGN-TV and WTTW Channel 11 Chicago. The curriculum is designed specifically for the solo jazz vocalist, and includes daily sessions in jazz performance styles, jazz improvisation and solo performance preparation, as well as artist master classes, vocal jazz history, music theory and nightly faculty artist performances. The week concludes with a final concert featuring each participant performing with the Staff Rhythm Section. The camp's international reputation draws students from all parts of the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia. Participants range in age and experience from high school and college students to adult professional vocalists and jazz educators. What participants say: "I have grown tremendously as a musician because of the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp. This camp has helped me develop an understanding and appreciation of the important elements of jazz, and given me an in-depth knowledge of the music's history and theory. It has also offered me exposure to world class jazz musicians who serve as role models of excellence and professionalism." Alyssa Allgood, 2005-13; winner, 2014 DownBeat Student Music Award "This camp was one of the most enriching experiences in my hands-on time with jazz. The unique focus of the program sheds light on the voice as an instrument - where others simply don't. You will come out of this camp with more than just a singer. You'll come out a better jazz musician." Dominic Guanzon, 2013 "I can say without hesitation that every singer would benefit from this camp. Every minute is designed to open the mind, expand musical skills and inspire participants to be passionate and fearless vocalists. The camp is an amazing experience. It forced me out of my comfort zone, and I felt supported, encouraged and inspired by the instructors and other campers. I witnessed a dramatic shift in confidence, skills and passion in both others and myself." Rachel Maher, 2012-13 "Completing the camp was one of the most significant accomplishments I've done. The week long immersion into jazz increased my self confidence and prepared me for a doctoral program that I subsequently completed in 1996. The skills I learned have stayed with me for years and helped me continue with my path as a lifelong learner. Janice has created an amazing learning experience" Rochelle Santopoalo, 1991-92 write your comments about the article :: © 2014 Jazz News :: home page |
