| High School Tucson Jazz Musicians Win Top at Natl Competition The Tucson Jazz Institute Ellington Big Band wins top spot again in the national competition, said a press release from the Tucson Jazz Institute. Winners for the Essentially Ellignton High School Jazz Band were announced Sunday night, the release said. "Attending the Essentially Ellington competition gives all of us the essential jazz nutrients and vitamins we could ever need, " said Doug Tidaback, director of the band, during the award ceremony at New York's Lincoln Center. "I learned something from each and every band director, and all the students who played at this festival." This was the fourth year Jazz at Lincoln Center invited the young musicians to the "World Series of high school bands" in New York City. Last year, the group also won the competition's overall division. The TJI Ellington Big Band competed with the top 15 high school big bands in the country, which were selected from thousands of submissions, the press release said. write your comments about the article :: © 2014 Jazz News :: home page |
