| Antonio Adolfo & Hendrik Meurkens win Brazilian International Press Award 2014 Legendary Brazilian pianist, composer and Arranger Antonio Adolfo and New York-based harmonica player, composer and vibraphonist Hendrik Meurkens won the Brazilian International Press Award USA 2014 for their performance with the Antonio Adolfo – Hendrik Meurkens Quartet featuring Jamie Ousley (bass) and Carlomagno Araya (drums). The Award will be presented on May 3rd, 2014, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, FL. That evening Antonio Adolfo will also be presented a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD for his contributions to Brazilian Popular Music and Brazilian Jazz. Antonio Adolfo and Hendrik Meurkens met 32 years ago when Hendrik Meurkens was living in Rio de Janeiro. "I remember where Antonio's house was. Somewhere in Jardim Botanico, I had to go up a hill to get there", says Hendrik. Both met again a few years ago when Hendrik was performing in Fort Lauderdale with his Samba Jazz Quartet. Antonio sat in and the two made plans to collaborate and play and record together. Antonio invited Hendrik to record on Carol Saboya's album, and in 2013 both finally formed their new band, the Antonio Adolfo – Hendrik Meurkens Quartet, and played several concerts in New York and Florida, one of which was awarded with the Brazilian International Press Award. The Antonio Adolfo – Hendrik Meurkens Quartet will be performing again in the New York City area in June and July. During that time they will be joined by singer Carol Saboya to record a new album with the three artists as co-leaders. write your comments about the article :: © 2014 Jazz News :: home page |
