David Fiuczynski's Planet Microjam at Vilnius Jazz Festival

by Antje Hübner, hubtone PR

Guitar virtuoso and master composer, David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, showcases his talent with Planet Microjam at the Vilnius Jazz Festival on October 13, 2013. He graces a festival that has become an important cultural hub in Eastern Europe, nurturing and promoting the eclectic traditions and developments of improvised music. The fest's adventurous programming features international jazz stars as well as Lithuania's homegrown talent. Fiuczynski, well-known for founding the Jazz Fusion/ Funk band, Screaming Headless Torsos, draws his unique sound from explorations of microtonality as well as Western sounds. He has found inspiration in the work of classical traditionalists and pioneers, such as Julian Carrillo, Alois Haba and Ivan Wyschnagradsky, and in the folk melodies rooted in Turkish, Arabic and Chinese musics.

"I'm trying to be the Gauguin of Fusion, to create a raw, powerful, and extremely colorful mix of Eastern and Western elements, " Fiuczynski says, "and Planet Microjam bears proof to this statement."

Fiuczynski is a musical archeologist, examining nuances and tonalities derived from the guitar fretboard. While microtonality is a unique pursuit on non-tempered instruments such as the guitar, Fiuczynski has made this a signature pursuit; his use of a custom double-neck fretted/fretless instrument adds to his unique style. His history has been that of a pioneering spirit, who draws from his instrument colors and sounds beyond those available to ordinary guitarists. In recent years, he has found himself sharing the stage with many musical greats, among them piano virtuoso Hiromi. Theirs is a particularly compelling relationship; each pushing the other to new creative heights.

Fiuczynski lent his musical magic to luminaries such as John Medeski, John Zorn, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Jack Walrath, Don Pullen, Billy Hart, Meshell Ndegeocello and Rudresh Mahanthappa; he has played on more than 95 albums.

Born in the United States and raised in Europe, the exceptional musician returned to the US to earn his Bachelor and Masters degrees. He is currently a full-time professor at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, and serves as Director of the Planet MicroJam Institute.

Utar Atun, Justin Schornstein and Amber Baker will provide the powerful support system for one of the most unique guitarists in the worlds of jazz and rock today.
