Jarasum International Jazz Festival

The Jarasum International Jazz Festival, one of the world's best attended jazz festivals celebrates its 10th edition from October 3rd to 6th in Gapeyong, South Korea. JIJF has come a long way since the very first edition in 2004. That year 30, 000 people turned up to watched 15 local bands and 12 international acts that included the Esbjorn Svensson Trio. Fast forward to 2012 when more than 230, 000 fans pitched up to see 72 South Korean bands and 28 international acts. The 10th birthday bash promises to another record breaking weekend.

With a strong commitment to promoting South Korean jazz, the festival begins on Thursday 3rd with the Jo Young Deok Trio, the winner of the 2012 Jarasum International Jazz Concours. This concert will be followed by Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz and his quartet. The first day headliner is South African jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim.

Friday's main stage program includes Miroslav Vitous and Project Q, featuring Wonsool Lee, Jangeun JB Bae, Jean Oh and Dongjin Shin, and headliner Lars Danielsson's Trio Libretto. Danielsson is well known to South Korean audiences through his collaborations with singer Youn Sun Nah, who returns to Jarasum International Jazz Festival with guitarist Ulf Wakenius on Saturday 5th.

Other outstanding acts include singer Madeline Peyroux on Friday 4th, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, all the way from New Orleans – the cradle of jazz. The JIJF closes on Monday with one of jazz's greatest pianists in Kenny Barron, who leads a trio with Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass and Carl Allen on drums.

A dozen other stages will host a diverse range of musical styles, from straight ahead jazz to funk and blues. For those who like to let their hair down and dance the Party Stage will once again provide the liveliest grooves of the long weekend.

For four days Jarasum Island becomes a jazz town. Food stalls serve all kinds of tasty food. Chill out areas and all sorts of fun and games mean that there's something to do no matter what your energy levels are like. JIJF's 10th anniversary bash promises to be a party not to be missed!
