| Josh Lawrence To Release New Album "One Night In Atlanta" Josh Lawrence, a rising jazz trumpet star, composer, and performer who has recorded with the likes of Erykah Badu and Boyz II Men, is readying a new album, "One Night in Atlanta, " for release Sept. 17, 2013. The new album features the Philadelphia-based Lawrence in an unorthodox trumpet-bass-drums trio, where he is joined by bassist Chris Riggenbach and drummer Michael de Castro. Employing a warm, fat sound, Lawrence features the trumpet in a way rarely heard on jazz recordings. The result is seven lush, unhurried, and cool tracks, all of which are composed by Lawrence. "It's a brave move to record a trio record with trumpet as the lead instrument and Josh Lawrence does it with confidence, " remarked noted jazz pianist Orrin Evans said. "Josh is truly a bright star on the new horizon." Lawrence performs regularly in Philadelphia and New York City, including frequent shows with Evans' Captain Black Big Band, winner of the prestigious Downbeat Critics Poll for 2013 Rising Star Big Band. In 2012, Lawrence was commissioned along with bassist Jason Fraticelli and drummer Anwar Marshall, by the Painted Bride in Philadelphia to compose and debut new music for a 10-piece ensemble. The Pew Center's Philadelphia Music Project funded a recording, which is in post-production. Lawrence is also currently writing music for the documentary "Love and Terror, " a film about the disappearance of a rural Nebraska college professor. Additionally, Lawrence teaches jazz trumpet at Drexel University and the University of the Arts. Earlier this year, he was invited as an artist-in-residence to the Kimmel Center's Creative Music Program and premiered a new work for big band at the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts. write your comments about the article :: © 2013 Jazz News :: home page |
