| The Montreux Jazz Festival Japan in Kawasaki 2013 to be Held The Montreux Jazz Festival (MJF), one of the world's top three jazz festivals, is held annually each July on the shore of Lake Geneva in Switzerland and gathers approximately 240 000 visitors. Originally aimed at revitalizing the city of Montreux, the festival first began in 1967 as a mere three day event, organized by the late Mr. Claude Nobs, MJF Founder and General Manager. However, during its 47 year history, MJF has grown into a prominent music event, featuring many famous artists from not only the world of jazz, but also rock, pop and other genres. Kawasaki was chosen as the stage for the festival due to its prominence as the City of Music and its active participation in music related community building initiatives through a variety of activities. The city has an abundance of musical resources, commencing with MUZA Kawasaki Symphony Hall, which has gathered high praise internationally, and the two music universities, Senzoku Gakuen College of Music and Showa Academia Musicae. Additionally, Kawasaki's proximity to Haneda Airport, which began to serve international routes, and therefore its easy accessibility, allows the city to attract not only audiences from within Japan but also abroad. With this great charm, the festival was realized in Kawasaki in November, 2011. Taking place this fall, the third annual MJF Japan in Kawasaki 2013 will host eleven performances over the span of nine days, an increase in the number of performances compared to previous years. Renowned artists from all around the globe, who have reached the top in their respective fields, will make their way to Kawasaki and perform in the festival. Additionally, during the first half of the festival, there will be a Night Market centered around LA CITTADELLA, located by the east exit of Kawasaki Station. The Night Market strives to add excitement to MJF Japan in Kawasaki and generate a lively atmosphere in the streets of Kawasaki. Although MJF Founder Mr. Claude Nobs passed away in an unexpected accident January of this year, it was his hope that jazz and all types of music transcending their genres will be delivered to all corners of the globe, as a brand of MJF, like a bouquet of flowers. His wish is beginning to take root in this city of Kawasaki. ■International Artists at the Montreux Jazz Festival Japan in Kawasaki 2013 Friday, November 22nd, 7:00pm~ Senzoku Gekuen Maeda Hall DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA with special guest Friday, November 22nd, 7:00pm~ CLUB CITTA', Saturday, November 23rd, 6:00pm~ CLUB CITTA' THUNDER+THE UNION Saturday, November 23rd, 3:00pm~ MUZA Kawasaki Symphony Hall MICHEL LEGRAND with ARTURO SANDOVAL Sunday, November 24th, 3:00 pm~ MUZA Kawasaki Symphony Hall RICHARD GALLIANO, BIRÉLI LAGRÈNE, DIDIER LOCKWOOD Saturday, November 30th, 3:00pm~ Showa Academia Musicae Teatro Giglio Showa CHUCHO VALDÉS & THE AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ MESSENGERS write your comments about the article :: © 2013 Jazz News :: home page |
