Savassi Festival: NY September 17 thg September 23, 2013

Originating in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, since 2003 Savassi Festival has focused on jazz and instrumental music. Beginning as a street festival associated with the musical activities of Café com Letras, it developed into a matrix of musical activities that includes contests, recordings, artistic collaborations, exhibitions, artistic residencies and a host of live concerts, representing the full spectrum of jazz, from jazz-symphonic pieces to eletronic music+jazz performances.

In the last 11 years it promoted 410 concerts, 51 workshops, 140 DJs performances to an audience of 220 thousand people. To gain access to the main event - the open-air street festival – one should donate 1kg of non-perishable food, fully destined to help people in social risk.
In 2013, for the first time, Savassi Festival promotes its New York edition. Completely focused on Brazilian instrumental music, featuring Brazilians and non-Brazilians, a wide range of music will be performed, from that of Hermeto Pascoal, Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta and Paulo Moura to the most current wave of Brazilian and Brazilian-inspired composers.

From the 16th to the 23rd of september, 18 concerts will be performed in various jazz clubs and 3 workshops at universities. In doing so, Savassi Festival begins a new chapter in the relationship between jazz and brazilian instrumental music, a work to be continued with an ongoing exchange and collaboration program between musicians and institutions of both countries.

Savassi Festival NY has partnerships with Americas Society, NYU Steinhardt and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program at Columbia University and collaborates with The Jazz Gallery, ShapeShifter Lab, Bar Next Door, Cornelia Street Café, Smalls Jazz Club, Le Poisson Rouge, The Bitter End and Space on White.

The festival is sponsored by the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, with a grant from the Fundo Estadual de Cultura and with the cultural support of the "Música de Minas" initiative. It is produced by the Instituto Cidades Criativas ("Creative Cities Institute") and presented by Café com Letras.
