| The Recording Academy Statement Re: Marian McPartland Recording Academy Trustees Award recipient Marian McPartland was a gifted and accomplished jazz pianist, writer, composer and longtime radio show host. Beginning her career in the late 1930s, McPartland broke through gender barriers to become a well-respected musician in the jazz scene, and her improvisational style lead her to create a sound that was uniquely her own. She also was a passionate and eloquent spokeswoman for the genre, lecturing at schools and colleges, writing for well-known music publications and, most notably, hosting her highly acclaimed NPR radio show for more than 30 years. Our culture has lost a national treasure, and jazz music will greatly miss one of its most ardent and beloved supporters. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends, and all who were enlightened and elevated by her music and discourse.
