| Jazz at the Maverick: Pianist Fred Hersch and clarinetist Anat Cohen Maverick Concerts, the oldest continuous summer chamber music festival in America, announces a return engagement by the internationally acclaimed jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch, as part of its "Jazz at the Maverick" Saturday evening series of contemporary jazz during its 98th season of Music in the Woods. Israeli clarinetist Anat Cohen will join Mr. Hersch for the concert, which is on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 6:30 pm. Fred Hersch Described by Vanity Fair magazine as "the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade, " Fred Hersch balances his internationally recognized instrumental skills with significant achievements as a composer, bandleader, and vocalist. An artist of unbounded imagination and skill, Mr. Hersch is, as Downbeat magazine declared, "one of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation." He was the first artist in the 75-year history of New York's legendary Village Vanguard to play week-long engagements. Mr. Hersch was nominated for two 2012 Grammy Awards and has won the Coup de Coeur of the Charles Cros Academy in France. More than 70 of his compositions have been recorded, and Mr. Hersch has been awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship, grants from Chamber Music America, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Meet the Composer. He has held seven composition residencies at The MacDowell Colony, in addition to performing on a wide variety of National Public Radio programs. Anat Cohen Clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. DownBeat magazine called her playing "a woodwind revelation of dark tones and delicious lyricism." Anat has been voted Clarinetist of the Year six years in a row by the Jazz Journalists Association, as well as 2012's Multi-Reeds Player of the Year. She has topped critics' and readers' polls in DownBeat and has headlined at the Newport, Umbria, SF Jazz and North Sea jazz festivals as well as at such hallowed clubs as New York's Village Vanguard.
