Visitors and guests will find that the Jefferson Street Jazz & Blues Festival is an event that no jazz or blues lover should miss. In the past, the festival has played host to such talents as After 7, James "Nick" Nixon, Lady Dianne and Marion Jones and many more. From the 1940s through the 1960s, Jefferson Street was at the center of African-American culture and business. It showcased jazz, blues and R&B musicians, including Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles and Little Richard. In the 1960s, the construction of Interstate 40 divided the street and cut off the traffic flow to local businesses. Desegregation also gave the neighborhood's residents the option of shopping in white stores. Vacant lots replaced the once thriving African-American businesses. About JUMP: The Jefferson Street United Merchants Partnership (JUMP) came together in the 1990s to promote the revitalization of historic Jefferson Street, a process that continues today. JUMP has sponsored the Jefferson Street Jazz and Blues Festival for the past 12 years. write your comments about the article :: © 2013 Jazz News :: home page |
