Dobell’s Jazz Record Shop exhibition to open

A new exhibition showcasing artefacts and photos from Dobell's Jazz Record Shop is to open at London's Chelsea Space. The event will feature previously unseen material from the Museum of London and British Record Shop Archive collections and explores the position of Dobell's in helping shape pop history from the shop's opening in 1946.

Dobell's played a particular pivotal role in bringing jazz musicians together – it acted as a meeting place for the likes of Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott and Johnny Dankworth.

The exhibition, which runs from 10 April until 18 May, will feature 'archive artefacts, ephemera and photographs' from the shop's almost 50 year opening history.

In a press release, organisers said: 'The imported US records purchased at the record shop inspired such pioneers of British jazz and blues as Alexis Korner, Cyril Davies and Chris Barber (amongst many others).

'All the bands of the British Blues explosion: The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Cream and Fleetwood Mac shopped there. Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick, Mac McGann, Bert Jansch, The Vipers Skiffle Group, Lonnie Donegan and other folk musicians raided the shop's racks of Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston records.'

The exhibition is being held to coincide with Record Store Day on 20 April.
