| Rebecca Kilgore in “Some Like it Hot: The Music of Marilyn Monroe” The Jazz Club of Sarasota presents renowned jazz/pop vocalist Rebecca Kilgore, in "Some Like It Hot: The Music of Marilyn Monroe, " Thursday, April 4, 7:30 p.m., at the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center, 709 N. Tamiami Trail, in Sarasota. Accompanying Kilgore will be saxophonist Harry Allen, guitarist Nate Najar, bassist Joel Forbes, and drummer Kevin Kanner. "We're thrilled to bring this very special concert to Sarasota, " says Frank Gooch, vice president of the Jazz Club of Sarasota. "April is Jazz Appreciation Month and I can't think of a more fitting way to celebrate it than with Rebecca Kilgore, accompanied by stellar musicians in this critically acclaimed tribute to the great Marilyn Monroe." Rebecca Kilgore is considered to be one of America's leading jazz/pop song stylists and interpreters of the Great American Songbook. Stephen Holden, music critic for The New York Times, writes, in a review of this show, "A pop-jazz singer whose fluent voice conjures sunlight glinting on running water, Ms. Kilgore infuses everything she performs with a sense of lighthearted enjoyment." Kilgore performs at concerts and jazz festivals worldwide and is a frequent guest on National Public Radio's "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross. She has also appeared on NPR'S "A Prairie Home Companion" and at Carnegie Hall with Michael Feinstein, who calls her "simply one of the best." Kilgore's fond and fun-loving tribute to the music of Marilyn Monroe, which played to sellout crowds at Feinstein's in New York City, has garnered the singer critical acclaim. Saxophonist Harry Allen has performed at jazz festivals and clubs worldwide and frequently tours the U.S., Europe and Asia, performing with the likes of Rosemary Clooney, Jay Geils, Harry "Sweets" Edison, John Pizzarelli and many others. Allen is also an award-winning recording artist and has recorded with such music industry luminaries as Tony Bennett, James Taylor and Sheryl Crow. Nate Najar is a compelling young jazz guitarist, composer and producer, grounded in classical music but with a distinct affinity for jazz, Latin, blues and gospel. He uses the acoustic guitar like a piano, eliciting rich and unique sounds that are the result of his ongoing mastery of the finger-style nylon string technique. Najar has performed alongside such jazz greats as Clark Terry, Ken Peplowski and Ray Kennedy. In 2008, Najar was invited by jazz pianist and educator, Dr. Billy Taylor, to perform in a Kennedy Center event celebrating Charlie Byrd and other jazz notables. Musician and composer Joel Forbes is an accomplished master of the acoustic bass and has been a popular fixture on the New York jazz scene for over 20 years. Forbes has shared the stage with such notable artists as Dan Barrett, Joe Cohn, Harry Allen and many others who appreciate his big sound, swinging beat and keen harmonic sense. Forbes has also been featured with his own quintet at the Guggenheim Museum's World Beat Jazz Series in New York. Drummer Kevin Kanner has performed domestically and internationally with John Pizzarelli, Maureen McGovern, Harry Allen, and many others. His recordings include two Grammy-nominated recordings with Bill Holman, and appearances with The Four Freshmen, Paul Anka and Michael Bublé. For six years Kanner also led "Grove Pocket, " the now legendary Los Angeles jazz jam session that ran for six years at the historic venue The Mint.
