504 Magazine sponsors 2nd Annual International Jazz Day

504 Magazines, The New Orleans Agenda and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization will serve as New Orleans host of the 2nd Annual International Jazz Day on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm for in a lunch time concert to be held in the birthplace of Jazz at Café Istanbul in the New Orleans Healing Center, 2372 St Claude Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana. The New Orleans' event will feature a performance by the Yisrael Trio conducted by Dr. Lud Yisael. The Yisrael Trio is one of our country's leading young Jazz bands.

"We are delighted to announce that Café Istanbul will serve as the host venue for the 2013 International Jazz Day celebration for this auspicious event, " stated, William Doc Jones, musician and Publisher of 504Multimedia. Café Istanbul New Orleans, known to be a meeting place for global cultures is an ideal location to highlight the extensive influence of jazz.

"The Café Istanbul location is quite fitting in that the City of Istanbul, Turkey as announced by UNESCO's Director-General, Irina Bokova will be the official host city for the Official 2013 International Jazz Day Celebration. Turkey has an age-old tradition of jazz, " adds Vincent Sylvain, Publisher of The New Orleans Agenda and general manager for the Carver Theater. Turkish Republic's first ambassador to Washington in the 1930s, opened his embassy's parlors to African American jazz musicians, who gathered there to play freely in a socio-historical context which was deeply divided by racial segregation at the time. Held every year on April 30th, International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools and groups from across the world to celebrate jazz, learn about its roots and highlight its important role as a form of communication that transcends differences. Although it was born in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, jazz is rooted in African traditions, draws from European musical forms, and has evolved into various styles across the globe.

This past June, the United States Conference of Mayors passed a resolution which urges mayors to build partnerships with their local jazz society and other members of the arts and music community in their cities to proclaim, to participate in, International Jazz Day April 30, 2013 and to celebrate the month of April as Jazz Appreciation Month. During the inaugural International Jazz Day celebration, New Orleans' Mayor Mitch Landrieu proclaimed that "Jazz was New Orleans' gift to the world. It's a music that signs freedom. It's a music that brings people together… that promotes individuality, authenticity, and community all at the same time. Jazz has the power to transform. Jazz has the power to solve conflict. Jazz has the power to create opportunities…"

504Multimedia/504Magazine and those under the 504Mag umbrella is sponsoring this year's International Jazz Day in New Orleans with the support of UNESCO's Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock (pictured here with Dr. William Jones). New Orleans' celebration of Int'l Jazz Day is slated to celebrate Mr. Herbie Hancock's contributions to the Art of Jazz.

504Multimedia will also coordinate events as well at other venues to be announce at a later date in Tokyo, Japan; Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California.
In addition to his involvement in the New Orleans International Jazz Day, Doc John will lead an All-Stars band at a free lunch time concert at the popular CityScape Phoenix, a $500 million mixed-use, high-rise destination in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona located at 1 East Washington Street. Attendees are promised "A Taste of New Orleans."

Expanding on the tremendous success of last year's inaugural International Jazz Day which was celebrated by millions worldwide during an all-star sunrise concert in New Orleans' Congo Square that included jazz luminaries Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, Stephanie Jordan, Ellis Marsalis, Kermit Ruffins, Roland Guerin, Bill Summers, Dr. Michael White, Glenn Hall III, Treme Brass Band and others; this year's official celebrations, concerts and educational programs will once again take place around the globe. Ambassador Hancock will be the focus person in Istanbul, Turkey for the International Jazz Day 2013 and has announced, "On International Jazz Day, jazz is celebrated, studied, and performed around the world for 24 hours straight." Hancock further stated, "Collaborations among jazz icons, scholars, composers, musicians, dancers, writers, and thinkers who embrace the beauty, spirit, and principles of jazz, freely sharing experiences and performances in our big cities and in our small towns, all across our seven continents."

Taken forward in partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, International Jazz Day was adopted by UNESCO Member States on the initiative of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock, in order to encourage and highlight jazz's unique power for advancing intercultural dialogue and understanding across the world. International Jazz Day is recognized on the official calendars of UNESCO and the United Nations. Its programs and events will be coordinated with all 195 Member States of UNESCO.
