| Arts Garage Announces Spring 2013 Jazz Project & Garage Blues Series Arts Garage ( 180 NE First Street, Delray Beach FL 33444) continues to bring the best in jazz & blues to the best audience in Florida. Upcoming Spring 2013 Jazz Project & Garage Blues Performances: January 5, 2013: Jazz Project 8pm Lenore Raphael with Howard Alden Lenore Raphael, a Steinway prodigy, performed at Carnegie hall when she was still a teenager. Now, she spends her time at major international jazz festivals and packed performance venues. Her swinging beats and deft fingers have earned her a spot at the top of the jazz piano roster of heavy-hitters. Howard Alden is a 7-string guitar master. As jazz critic Wayne Thompson of Jazzscene writes, "If there are better young jazz guitar players in America than Howard Alden, I have yet to hear them." He has won dozens of awards and has been featured in movie soundtracks, including Woody Allen's 1999 Academy Award-Nominated Sweet and Lowdown. Together, this skillful duo delights audiences with harmonious melodies, peppered with surprising improvisation. January 11, 2013: Jazz Project, 7:30pm Federico Britos There is no greater proof of the universality of jazz and classical music than the career and life work of violinist Federico Britos. This titan of the violin, who is equally adept within the world of jazz music as he is in the classical realm, has built a solid reputation worldwide. In the span of his career, he has performed with almost all the living legends, including Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Woody Herman and Benny Goodman. Grammy winner Paquito d'Rivera credits Britos with introducing bossa nova in Cuba, and he has since gained recognition as one of the most versatile and talented instrumentalists of his generation. He has won five Grammy awards and collaborated on countless albums. Arts Garage is honored to feature this music legend for a concert that showcases this extraordinary talent. January 12, 2013: Jazz Project, 8pm Turk Mauro Saxophone giant Turk Mauro is known worldwide for his precision and flare. First introduced to music through his father, a swing musician, Turk went on to play sax with Dizzy Gillespie. He then embarked on a stellar solo career that took him around the world. His comfort with a range of styles, from big band swing to hard bop and classic jazz, has earned him a reputation as one of the most versatile saxophone artists in the region. January 18, 2013: Jazz Project, 8m Michael Levine Band Mike Levine is a man of many talents. After studying piano at the University of Miami, his career took off and has spanned genres and generations. He has collaborated with some of today's forefront musicians, like Jaco Pastorius, Michael Bolton, Ed Calle, and Duffy Jackson. His new album Thinking of You landed him on Billboard for five weeks in the top 30, as well as on the SmoothJazz.com Indie chart for 17 weeks. He entertains audiences with a variety of styles, at one moment playing seductive jazz from the heart and next rocking toe-tapping rhythm that gets people moving. He is as comfortable playing jazz classics as he is original compositions, and always delivers a performance that brings audiences back for more. January 19, 2013: Garage Blues, 8pm Bob Margolin Inspired by Chuck Berry, Bob Margolin began playing guitar in 1964. A mere nine years later, Muddy Waters hired him, and Bob learned volumes from playing alongside him during performances. Margolin was featured with Muddy Waters in Martin Scorcese's The Last Waltz in 1976. He has recorded numerous albums, and in 2005 was honored with the W.C. Handy award for best instrumentalist. Nicknamed "Steady Rollin" for his mellow tunes and rolling melodies, Margolin brings a classy elegance to his music and redefines old blues standards. January 26, 2013: Jazz Project, 8pm Randy Brecker South Florida legend Randy Brecker is one of the most versatile trumpeters in the industry. Well known as part of the popular duo The Brecker Brothers and nominated for seven Grammy awards, Randy has also recorded and toured with music legends like Jaco Pastorius, Blue Oyster Cult, and Bruce Springsteen. Randy Brecker has played music practically since he could walk, and has been swinging audiences for over 40 years. He began playing R&B and funk in local bar bands while in his teens, and developed an ear for hard bop through his father's record collection. When he was just 22, he won the first International Jazz Competition in Vienna. He is perhaps best known as part of the duo The Brecker Brothers, a group he formed with his brother, late trumpeter Michael Brecker. Together the Brecker Brothers were nominated for 7 Grammy awards, and won 2 Grammys for their 1994 album Out of the Loop. February 9, 2013: Jazz Project, 8pm Allan Harris World-class singer, guitarist and songwriter Allan Harris has music running through his veins. Perhaps best known for his interpretations of jazz standards, Allan's smooth vocals and guitar styling easily cross genres, from jazz to rock to blues. He is a three-time recipient of the New York Nightlife Award for "Outstanding Jazz Vocalist, " and Tony Bennett calls Allan "my favorite singer." Allan has cultivated a global following, playing for packed audiences and receiving outstanding reviews throughout the United States, Europe, Russia and the Far East. February 16, 2013: Garage Blues, 8pm Johnny Rawls Raised in southern Mississippi, Johnny Rawls was drawn to music as a young boy after hearing his grandfather play blues guitar. By the time he was in high school, he was playing guitar alongside greats such as Z.Z. Hill and Little Johnny Taylor. He has since traveled the world, bringing his traditional southern sound and fresh lyrics to people everywhere. Arts Garage is excited to welcome this blues icon to the stage for the most memorable Valentine's performance of your life. February 22, 2013: Jazz Project, 7:30pm Ted Rosenthal Ted Rosenthal has performed worldwide as a soloist, leader and sideman with many jazz greats, including Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, James Moody and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Winner of the 1988 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, Rosenthal has released twelve CDs as a leader; his latest, "Impromptu, " features jazz reimaginings of classical themes. His solo album, The 3 B's received four stars from DownBeat magazine. He has also been a featured soloist with orchestras including the Detroit and Fort Worth Symphonies, and the Boston Pops. Rosenthal is Artistic Director of Jazz at Dicapo, a faculty member at Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School, and a published author. A recipient of three NEA grants, Rosenthal composes jazz tunes and large-scale works, including music for Uptown for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. February 23, 2013: Jazz Project, 8pm Troy Roberts Hailing from the remote location of Perth, West Australia, saxophonist and composer Troy Roberts has won four consecutive Downbeat Jazz Soloist Awards, two consecutive West Australian Music Industry Awards was the only Australian finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, received his first Grammy Nomination Medal, and has shared the stage with greats such as Sammy Figueroa, James Morrison, Stephen Scott, Slide Hampton, Bobby Sparks, Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton. More recently, Troy represented Australia, sharing the stage as part of an international band made up of jazz greats Wayne Shorter, Richard Bona, Vinnie Colaiuta, Zakir Hussain, Tineke Postma and Tarek Yamani for Herbie Hancock’s launch of the first ever UNESCO International Jazz Day at The UN Assembly Hall, NYC. Having been on faculty at The University of Miami for the past 3 years, Troy is currently based in New York, is celebrating his 4th internationally released record Nu-Jive (2011) and continues to maintain a busy performance and recording schedule around the globe. March 9 2013: Jazz Project 8pm Rose Max Rose Max has music in her blood. She is the great-granddaughter of the conductor and composer Cupertino de Menezes and granddaughter of the guitar player and composer Manuel de Menezes. Gifted with a beautiful voice early on, Rose got her start singing in the nightclub-heavy Rio de Janeiro, where she mastered the styles of bossa nova, samba, and Latin jazz. After moving to the United States in 1993, Rose continued performing and touring. She is a three-time recipient of the Brazilian Press Award for “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA.” Rose is complemented by the intricate stylings of Brazilian acoustic guitarist Ramatis, a Brazil native who has garnered attention stateside as the Brazilian Press Award winner for “Best Brazilian Musician, ” and “Best Brazilian Producer” living in the United States. The two musicians travel all over the world, transporting their audiences to the beaches and the bustling streets of Rio wherever they go. March 16, 2013: Garage Blues, 8pm Lauren Mitchell Band The Lauren Mitchell Band, featuring front-woman Mitchell’s galvanizing vocals backed by the talents of veteran rock and blues artists, has roared on to the South Florida arts scene with undeniable ferocity. The group was born in 2005 when Lauren Mitchell teamed up with keyboard sensation Mike Hensley to create a sound that celebrated everything they loved about blues, soul, and rock. Since then, the band has incorporated the best talent it can find, to bring audiences a sound that is fresh and exciting.
