Rush Nominated For the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

While Canadian power trio Rush have been eligible for entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1998, it has taken an additional 14 years for the band, which has sold over 25 million records in the U.S. alone, to finally be included on the ballot.

Rush are one of 15 acts currently vying for induction and the field this year is extremely diverse. Hip-hop pioneers N.W.A. and Public Enemy are on the list as are disco artists Chic and Donna Summer and German electronic group Kraftwerk. These acts are joined by Albert King, Deep Purple, Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Marveletts, the Meters, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Procol Harum and Randy Newman.

The diversity of this year's nominees was acknowledged in a press release from Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

"The definition of 'rock and roll' means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music, " Peresman said. "This year we again proudly put forth a fantastic array of groups and artists that span the entire genre that is 'rock and roll."'

This year, for the first time, the public will also get a say on who is inducted into the Hall of Fame as fans can vote until December 5th at RollingStone.com. The public votes will join those of the 600 artists, music historians and industry insiders that usually make up the voting body.

Once chosen the class of 2013 will be honoured in a ceremony on April 18, 2013 in Los Angeles.
