| The September Concert: The Heart of Jazz Tuesday, September 11 More than 30 of NYC's top jazz artists will gather on 9/11 to mark the anniversary of New York's most tragic day with The Heart of Jazz -- a segment of the annual citywide free concert series, The September Concert. TSC: The Heart of Jazz this year will be held once again at Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar on Tuesday, September 11th from 6:00 pm until 11:00 pm. The Sugar Bar is located at 254 W. 72nd St. (bet. Broadway & West End Ave.), mere steps from bus lines and the 1, 2 & 3 train subway stop at 72nd Street. There is no cover charge for this event. As much spiritual event as concert, since 2005 The Heart of Jazz has offered NYC's jazz community a locale to gather, to mourn and look forward in peace -- a place to explore the impact of the WTC attacks on themselves, their musical family and their fellow NYers -- through the healing qualities of the music. While The Heart of Jazz roster remains under wraps until just prior to the event to allow artists to take last-minute paying gigs, the caliber of musicians represented yearly is seen by a quick view of some of the more than 160 artists who have played THOJ at various points during its first seven years - Cameron Brown, Dwayne Burno, Jay Clayton, Claire Daly, Dena DeRose, Hilliard Greene, Ratzo B. Harris, Sheila Jordan, Steve LaSpina, Eric Lewis, Ron McClure, Eric McPherson, Peter Malinverni, Mark Murphy, Judy Niemack, Luis Perdomo, Lonnie Plaxico, Jeanfrançois Prins, Judi Silvano, Kendra Shank, Sean Smith, Lisa Sokolov, Roseanna Vitro and James Weidman are but some of the many artists who have played over the years -- many of them for multiple years. (NOTE: This list for example purposes only; this year's roster TBD.) Starting as a small grassroots effort in NYC in 2002, The September Concert Foundation now organizes more than 250 free concerts each Sept. 11th, in all genres, with more than 8, 000 performers and 10, 000 volunteers. In addition to nearly 100 concerts held in NYC, some 40 U.S. cities now host September Concerts, as do 39 international cities such as Rome, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Johannesburg and Casablanca. The September Concert attempts to transform the pain and anguish of September 11, 2001 into a day of music to celebrate our universal humanity. The event adheres to three basic principles: All venues and musicians are free to design and organize their own concerts; all music and musicians are treated equally, regardless of genre or background; and all music is offered free of charge.
