Comess has had strong roots in jazz since his early musical life. As far back to the 1980s, he was Best Jazz Soloist for two consecutive years via DownbeatТs High School Student Awards. Then, when attending arts magnet school in Dallas, jazz groups he played in won Best Big Band and Best Small Group for three years in a row. Comess went on to attend Berklee College of Music on scholarship, and then attended The New School Jazz Program in NYC. He comments: УIТve always had a true love for listening to and playing jazz that has filtered in to all the work I have done since. I love playing songs just as much as I love to improvise, and the freedom that comes from playing jazz music is something I very much love to do.Ф

УIТm excited to get this group of musicians together for the Smoke Jazz shows. WeТve all played together in different groups over the years and IТm certain the chemistry is going to be something special. WeТre going to be focusing on some of my favorite material, mostly from the 1960s - The innovation and quality was so high in this period of jazz, and we are looking forward to exploring this material with our own twist on things. We will also include some of my originals of my 2 records УCatskills CryФ and УBeautiful MistakeФ.

Aaron Comess also happens to be the drummer and a founding member of the multi-platinum-selling SPIN DOCTORS, and recently celebrated the bandТs 20th Anniversary of their smash CD СPocket Full of KryptoniteТ with an acclaimed CD reissue and world tour.

Aaron Comess:
Drummer/guitarist/composer/producer Aaron Comess won wide acclaim for his powerful 2011 solo CD, СBeautiful MistakeТ. Veteran writer Jack Goodstein praised via BLOGCRITICS, УThis may be instrumental rock at its base, but if it is, it clearly demonstrates the creative variety skilled musicians can build on that base.Ф Other critics described the music as Уengagingly dramatic, wildly entertaining, Ф as having Уa complicated, concurrent brilliance, Ф and focused on specific tracks as building Уin intensity and style, adding funk and volume until it's ready to blow out the top.Ф The track УPast, Present and FutureФЕquite literally, comes crashing down in a heap of feedback, cymbal bashing and shuddering reverb. ItТs one of the loudest, best things on a very interesting record.Ф

Comess deftly created sweeping songs that were emotive without words, leaving his commanding drum work and the СvoiceТ of his bandТs electric guitar (Teddy Kumpel) and bass (Richard Hammond) to weave a dramatic soundscape.аа Comess is the drummer and a founding member of the multi-platinum-selling SPIN DOCTORS, and the band recently celebrated the 20th Anniversary of their smash CD СPocket Full of KryptoniteТ with a double-CD release and world tour that generated huge press coverage.
