Mathias Eick Quintet wins BMW jazz awards

Norwegian trumpet player Mathias Eick and his quintet took first place at the finals of the BMW Jazz Awards in Munich, winning both the prize of the jury as and the audience award. On Saturday, 5th of May, in the concert hall of Munichs BMW Welt auditorium, they won against Spanish pianist Augustí Fernández's Aurora trio, with Barry Guy and Ramón López.

The jury, consisting of music journalists as well as representatives of the cultural department of the Munich City council and the local club scene, praised Eick's concept of letting the "outstanding elegiac compositions be driven by two drummers. In spite of their tight, harmonic interplay, the individual prowess of all musicians could be heard to its best."

Mathias Eick's albums as leader for ECM are Skala and The Door. He also appears on Manu Katché's Playground, on Iro Haarla's Northbound and Vespers, and on Jacob Young's Evening Falls and Sideways.

Runner-up Agustí Fernández can also be heard on ECM recordings, including three discs with Evan Parker, while Aurora bassist Barry Guy has leader discs of his own, most recently Folio.
