2 New School Jazz Groups at Joe's Pub

The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music is proud to announce a new collaboration with the world-renowned downtown performance venue proud to announce a new collaboration between the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and the world-renowned downtown performance venue, Joe's Pub at the Public Theater. Consistent with the club's reputation as a premier showcase stage for up-and-coming musicians and emerging artists from a variety of disciplines, each semester the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music will be presenting performances by selected student ensembles at Joe's Pub, providing our talented young musicians with real-world professional experience playing in one of New York's (and therefore the world's) finest music rooms.

Our first event at the club is a fantastic double-header of music featuring two great groups in two separate shows:

7PM: The Rhythm & Blues Revue, directed by Michael Wolff
featuring special guest Lenny Pickett
This super-funky big band will be performing timeless music by Sly Stone, Raphael Saadiq, D'Angelo, Frankie Beverly & MAZE, James Brown and more.

9:30PM: The New School Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, directed by Bobby Sanabria
Plays the music of the Latin Jazz tradition of East Harlem which was created by the Cuban maestro Mario Bauzá. With blazing brass and driving percussion, this group never fails to get audiences on their feet and onto the dance floor.

Faculty member Michael Wolff is a jazz pianist, composer, producer, actor, and educator. He was honored as a Steinway Artist and obtained a BMI Cable Award. Wolff was the bandleader and musical director of the CBS prime-time talk show Arsenio Hall, which broadcast from 1989-94. He also co-starred on the Nickelodeon musical comedy series The Naked Brothers Band, earning him a BMI Cable Award for producing the series' music.

Drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, educator, and bandleader, New School Jazz faculty member Bobby Sanabria has performed and recorded with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaría, Paquito d'Rivera, Ray Barretto, Henry Threadgill, Larry Harlow, and the Godfather of Afro-Cuban jazz, Mario Bauzá. Sanabria's big band recording, Live & in Clave!!! was nominated for a mainstream Grammy in 2001. DRUM! Magazine named him Percussionist of the Year in 2005.
