The Mario Castro Quintet at The Regattabar, Cambridge

The Regattabar, located at 1 Bennett Street, in Cambridge Massachusets, proudly presents The Mario Castro Quintet with Davie Liebman and Greg Osby, Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 PM. The Mario Castro Quintet is one of the brightest and up and coming jazz groups based in the Boston area. The group is lead by Mario Castro, a 2011 Berklee College of Music Graduate from Humacao, Puerto Rico. At 24, Castro is already an accomplished musician and has studied with McArthur Grant Recipient Miguel Zenon, George Garzone, and Dave Santoro among others. According to saxophonist Dave Liebman, Mario has "a gorgeous sound on the tenor and most of all, leadership and passion."

Along with Castro, the group is comprised of trumpeter Dave Neves, pianist KyuMin Shim, bassist Tamir Shmerling, and drummer Jon Pinson (who was recently admitted into the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute).

Initiated in the summer of 2010, The Mario Castro Quintet has been taking the jazz world by storm with performances at The Newport Jazz Festival and The Martha's Vineyard Jazz Festival. "Leading, playing and writing music for my quintet has been a very meaningful stage in my life, " says Castro.

The Mario Castro Quintet will be celebrating the release of their premier album, Primavera, by playing selections from the highly anticipated work. "This is a real JAZZ recording, no tricks, no games, pure beauty, energy and honesty. For a premier performance it doesn't get much better, " continues Dave Liebman regarding the release.

Joining the group will be National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master Dave Liebman and saxophone great Greg Osby, whose record label (Inner Circle Music) is releasing Primavera.

The Mario Castro Quintet is thrilled to be celebrating the release of their new album at The Regattabar on April 17th and promises that it will be an infectious and unforgettable evening featuring originals from Primavera as well as some newly arranged standards. The Regattabar functions as a full bar and restaurant.
