Arts Garage showcases an exciting weekend

Fresh, diverse, and eclectic programming have become a trademark trait of the Arts Garage in Delray Beach. In a short time, the venue gained a solid reputation in the region for bringing nationally renowned artists and local legends to its intimate space. The combination of incredible talent with the casual, relaxed atmosphere and the "Bring Your Own Whatever" policy resulted in a devoted and growing audience base and frequently sold out performances.

This week's line up once again showcases amazing artists and distinctly diverse programming designed to satisfy its audience's hunger for arts and culture.

Davis and Dow | Jazz Project, Saturday, March 23 at 9 PM

Multi award winning jazz duo Davis and Dow join an impressive line up of renowned jazz musicians performing for the Jazz Project at the Arts Garage. "Jazz is our greatest American art form. It is precious and yet very fragile in this day in age when music and art is being yanked out of so many schools. It transcends prejudice and bigotry. It inspires the weary and gives hope to the young, " said Julie Davis. "Jazz is where we can all come together and meld our cultures and ideas in an extemporaneous yet cooperative celebration. So we thank Arts Garage from the bottom of our hearts for supporting and promoting America's true art form in such a hip and sophisticated venue."

Known as soul mates that are two strong halves of one BIG sound, Davis and Dow tackle jazz and pop standards with a daring sense of abandon. Their style is deeply rooted in the classic jazz tradition but with a playfulness that keeps the music fresh and fun. Recognized as one of the finest and most versatile jazz singers of her generation, Julie Davis is everything from scat‐singer to balladeer and Kelly Dow is a world‐class guitarist.

"We share the same passion with Davis and Dow, " said Alyona Ushe, executive director of Arts Garage. "We are committed to cross generational barriers by introducing 'the newer generations to a young American art form called jazz' as Julie puts it. "

Davis and Dow have toured Japan, London, and New York. They've composed and performed original music for the TV show FoodNation with Bobby Flay and produced Great Jazz Divas: a multimedia show that celebrates women, music, and history. They have been featured in JazzTimes Magazine's 2002 year

in review issue and voted Best Jazz Artists by New Times Magazine with Julie Davis also being voted Best Jazz Vocalist by City Link Magazine. Davis and Dow were also awarded a juried showcase at the prestigious Performing Arts Exchange 2007 in Louisville, KY.

Woody Sez: The Life and Music of Woody Guthrie, Through April 8

Wednesday – Fridays at 7:30 PM, Saturday at 6 PM and Sundays at 2 PM

The production opened on March 16 to a sold-out house and critical reviews from critics and audience member alike. The perfect production to launch The Theatre at Arts Garage is a musical play that celebrates the American spirit revels in the American folk music tradition, and honors the American character in tough economic times. 2012is the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie, America's most revered 20th Century folk singer. Woody Sez is an award-winning musical celebration of our country's courage in the face of the Great Depression, a theme that will strike a chord in our hearts and minds as we recover from the economic challenges of today."The piece focuses on Guthrie's music and the stories he told of the Depression, knowing that those stories will resonate today with the economic downturn we're all facing, " Lou Tyrrell, Artistic Director of The Theatre at Arts Garage says.

"During this centenary of Guthrie's birth, it is sobering to realize how many of Guthrie's musically rich, observant songs apply to our 21st century troubles. Woody Sez is a modest show, part theater, part concert. But as with so much of the theater that inspires Tyrrell, it's a piece that provokes thought as it entertains." Christine Dolen, Miami Harold

"One of the most progressive and ambitious art undertaking to come to Palm Beach County in years, Arts Garage in Delray Beach is adding another notch to their cultural belt this week when The Theatre at Arts Garage opens with its debut production Woody Sez." Steven Brown, Palm Beach Illustrated.
