| 92Y JAZZ IN JULY Festival 92nd Street Y announces the annual 92Y Jazz in July festival, which runs from Monday, July 16 to Thursday, July 26. This is pianist and Blue Note recording artist Bill Charlap's eighth year as 92Y Jazz in July's artistic director. Charlap brings together some of the world's finest jazz players for once-in-a-lifetime performances. 92Y Jazz in July concerts begin with a rare New York appearance by the legendary Ernie Andrews and the great Freddy Cole in an evening of song; a celebration of Richard Rodgers closes the first week of the festival with a line-up including the incomparable Barbara Carroll, young vocal star Sachal Vasandani, and an all-star line-up including Warren Vaché. In between Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes explore the groundbreaking work of Bill Evans. The second week opens with a night bringing together Charlap with his Jazz in July predecessor Dick Hyman, who passed the artistic director baton in 2005. Art Blakey gets his due as Lewis Nash and Kenny Washington put the drums front and center and 92Y Jazz in July swings to a close with the Count Basie Orchestra and special guests NEA Jazz Master Frank Wess and festival favorite Bucky Pizzarelli. The festival kicks off with a Master Class for two aspiring pianists. One of the world's premier jazz pianists, Bill Charlap has performed and recorded with many of the leading jazz artists of our time. With his long-term trio of bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, he has released a series of highly-acclaimed albums for the Blue Note label, including the Grammy-nominated CDs The Bill Charlap Trio – Live at the Village Vanguard and Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein. He produced and performed on Mosaic: A Celebration of Blue Note Records, a collection of classic Blue Note repertoire, and most recently, 2010's Double Portrait, a collaboration with his wife, the renowned pianist Renee Rosnes, recorded at 92nd Street Y. Charlap creates 92Y Jazz in July in conjunction with Hanna Arie-Gaifman, Director of 92Y TischCenter for the Arts, which produces 92Y's concert series, including Jazz in July. Tuesday, July 17 SONG & SOUL: ERNIE ANDREWS & FREDDY COLE Two of America’s greatest interpreters of song open Jazz in July with two separate bands to create a festival-within-a-festival. Freddy Cole returns with his esteemed quartet, and in a rare New York appearance, the soulful Ernie Andrews performs with the Bill Charlap Trio and the bluesy tenor sax of Houston Person. It’s also an historic meeting of Lewis Nash and Kenny Washington: two of the most prodigious drummers in the world.
